Hey andym79

I also had a PTA approved for a .303 SMLE, and I already own a .300WM and a 45-70

I emailed them my justification amd it sufficed. I even got an email response from SAPOL

They received my PTA on the 10th December and I got it in the letterbox 13th Jan

So they are being reasonable about it then, thats good news.

One of the property owners that I shoot for told me he will write a letter for me stating that he will only allow shooting on his propety with the use of 50 cal rifles

In preparation for my next purchase I have drafted a letter outlining my need for a .223 based on cheeper operating costs than my .243 due to longer barrel life and reduced reloading costs, improved ballistic performance on small pests, and a little spin on health, safety and environment , easier on my eyes, ears and shoulder during extended sessions, reduced environmental impact compared to my .243

I'm considering re drafting it into a more professional format with bold headings, colours, dot points, pie graphs, charts and pictures just give it maximum impact

I would hope it wouldn't be the case but I'd tone it down a tad just in case they could use all this to say "then you don't need the 243".

eg, " I also hunt rabbits but have found my 22's are not accurate enough at the distances encountered and conversely whilst I have used my 243 it is also too destructive for any consumption purposes. But more so, the cost of the amount of ammunition I use is inhibiting me from hunting them more often.

From my research a 223 is a lot more ideal for this purpose due to its much reduced reloading costs and improved ballistic performance on the smaller pests and it will allow me to hunt this vermin more often, thereby further assisting the farmers on the properties I have approval to hunt. ect, etc, ect

I wouldn't add charts etc as it could become too technical, which could leave you open to alternative interpretations if the information is not entirely accurate :D

I said I needed a .303 for a particular match I want to shoot and that 300WM is overpowered for it.

Sapol responded and said thankyou, we'll bear it in mind and take it into consideration.

That's a nicely worded letter Johnny. Done entirely without any name calling or other rubbish. Straight and to the point.

This subject made the news column in Sporting Shooter magazine on line. I think it's a bit weird, and would seem to have been dreamed up by someone who has no idea of recreational hunting and shooting. Consultation is a great thing and sadly missing in too many cases.

Hi all, new to the forum, I bought another B class firearm yesterday at the gun show and dropped the PTA in at the local police station, with it I supplied a hand written, dated, signed letter stating that I intend on using the firearm for long distance target shooting and hunting and that I do not own a firearm of this caliber, I hope that will be enough justification, only time will tell, I'll find out in 2-3 months I guess

The PTA I'm waiting on is for another shotgun, so class A, shouldn't be a problem, the new one I bought is a 25-06, my 5th B class, when I spoke to the firearms branch to get an update on my other PTA, I told them what I bought and the letter I wrote, they told me that what I wrote was more than enough and there will be no problem being approved, and they told me they are running 2-3 months behind at the moment

Well that's positive in light of all this worry.

2 months to see if they're good to their word now then.

I understand that we have no right to own firearms, but we have no right to drive cars either. Image the public outcry if it took 6 months to hear back about your car registration or your license renewal.

I was told by " Service Sa " the other day while renewing my licence that it might take 5 months before i see the new one in the post .... meanwhile the temporary license will run out,
I wonder how i will go buying ammo with an expired licence ? On that note, how will i go if i get pulled over with guns and ammo in the car and a expired licence ?

We really should be thumping the counter of the firearms branch, I would have when i went down Greenhill Road the other day to ask them why my paperwork arrived in an open envelope but their office building has a security card pass door ( no public access ) and their phone went unanswered every time i tried calling. .... blody useless.

Check with your state but I can tell you in Victoria if you have submitted your license renewal before it expires, then it does expire before the new license is renewed and issues that's fine.

You can operate on an expired license as per usual as long as the renewal was submitted before the expiry.

police.vic.gov.au wrote:What should I do if my licence expires while I am waiting for my renewal application to be processed?
You may keep any firearms in your possession until your application is determined.

Hopefully SA has the same for you.

Being serious,,, Didn't the NSW mob try this very same thing on a number of years back ???

ie: You cant have another .308 because you already have one of those.
