Selling first rifle

Post by andym79 » 16 Feb 2015, 12:02 pm

Hi guys I have just sold my first rifle. It needs to move interstate from SA to NSW.

Is the process as follows:

1) Take the rifle to an SA dealer and pay them transfer fee and shipping cost to buyers dealer.
2) The dealer completes paper work to transfer the firearm, do I get a copy as evidence that the rifle is no longer in my possession?
3) I need to fill out the rifle rego papers and return to SAPOL declaring I not longer posses the rifle?

One more question. I will be taking the rifle to the dealers today or tomorrow.

On the rifles rego, you need to fill in stuff on the back when selling a rifle.

"Notification of Sale or Disposal to a dealer or interstate purchaser"

"It is the sellers responsibility to ensure that the purchaser holds a validated permit to purchase and an appropriate licence for the class of firearm being sold"

It asks for the buyers licence number, name and address.

Is this required or do I just fill out the SA dealers details and send to the firearms branch as the rifle will be transferred from an SA to an NSW dealer and will go on to both of their books before being transferred to the purchaser?

Sorry to ask, but my experience has only been buying, and I want to make sure I will not have a rifle that I no longer posses listed against my licence.

Best bet is to phone local dealer and ask about procedure.

The dealer will handle everything for you.

The wording of a lot of it can be contradictory and makes things unclear, but it's simpler than it suggests.

You take it to the dealer, the dealer takes possession of it from you onto their books.
SA dealer transfers from their books interstate to transferring NSW dealer.
NSW dealer does PTA etc. for buyer and sells it to them.

All interstate firearms sales have to be transferred through dealers so you're not actually selling it to the buyer. At the end of the chain the NSW dealer is selling it to them and they take responsibility for putting it in the buyers hands.

Yep, you're really selling to the dealer who's responsible for the details.

Not the end guy.

I sold my .243 a while ago interstate.

I can't remember 100% to be honest but I think I just got the guys name, license number and dealer name on his side and gave it all to my LGS. That was it from me.

They took it onto their books and transferred it just with the guys name at the other end so the NSW dealer knew who it was for when it arrived.
