Is 17 HMR Cat A or B in South Australia?

Post by andym79 » 25 Nov 2017, 7:36 am

With all the things that got changed here in SA in July. Mostly detrimentally to us.

Does anyone know if they did anything sensible like rectify the fact that a 17hmr is a RIMFIRE but is classed as a class B

Is it still?

Do you need to provide evidence of genuine reason just like a centrefire?

Hi the 17hmr as far as I’m aware has always been a class A firearm, I’ve had 2 and both where registered as class A. The only thing I can think of is whoever’s told you that was referring to the 17 rem which is a centre fire.

When did you get them? When I bought my 17HMR about 5 years back I had to register it as Cat B.

You don't need to provide evidence for it, you just need to write in the box why you need it. I think I wrote something like "to shoot small game" and they approved it.

Edit:

Taking a look at the new act they would be Cat A. The old act said:

class A firearms means —
...
(b) .22 rim fire rifles (not being self-loading rifles); and ...

The new act just says rimfire rifles.

I stand corrected when I bought my last 1 the dealer said they where car A so I just thought they where. But I got my paper work out and they are registered as cat B I’ll look first next time. But when I registered them I didn’t have to give evidence on what it’s use was for I just ticked the hunting and target shooting boxes

Well that's dumb :wtf:

What's their logic in registering it as a Cat B there? The velocity?
