Can I move to Perth with all my guns?

Post by junjun » 23 Apr 2018, 8:40 pm

Recently drove to Perth from Melbourne with one of those massive motorhome, it was a relocation deal so I only paid half of the petrol. Upon arrived Perth, I found that's a very beautiful city! Houses are actually affordable there! Kings Park is definitely the most beautiful park in Australia.

I can picture myself living there. Now comes the problem, I have 3 rifles and 2 pistol. One of the rifle I suppose it's the scary looking one, because there is a pistol grip and black and with a big scope. One 9mm pistol and one .22LR pistol.

If I decide to relocate myself to Perth, with the strict gun law there, do I need to give up all my guns? I really enjoy IPSC and my .22LR Ruger MK IV.

I did it it’s a massive pain in the arss and will cost you a fortune (servacibillity certs for each gun , posting to a licensed dealer and the 3 months to get a licence ,, and the pistols you would be best to talk to a shop ,, I use the guys at downrange in Osbourne park they where really helpful and had the best price on servacibillity certs )

Yeah, it might be pretty, but its like moving to a different country.
And the soil errr, SAND that Perth city is built on (even the yakkas don't grow well in it) would blow away if it wasn't
held down by the tar and cement.

Well I think I'd better duck for cover now and wait for the guided missiles and smart bombs from the Wait Awhile state.

Oh, and good luck with their F/A regs and rules.

I lived in Perth for a year in the late 90's, can't say I remember much as those were the days I was still drinking. Great city in the summer but in winter it was almost like a ghost town, hopefully it's changed in the past 18 years. I recall the cabbies were awesome, on more then 1 occasion they assisted me from the cab and in through the front door :) If it wasn't for their retarded firearms laws I'd consider living there again, my brother lives in Mandurah and my sister lived in Balingup till a few years back.

OK you asked for it :D

In the early 90's I decided to go visit QLD and was told beforehand to contact QLD Transport re 4WD restrictions, which I thought seemed odd.

Sent them an email advising my plans and to also visit Fraser etc and I had a V8 4Runner etc etc. I received a reply advising in strong terms that I would NOT be allowed to drive on Qld roads in my 4Runner being a V8. WTF.

I replied it is fully approved by WA Transport and insured etc. Still no go. Replied again advising I was intending to travel within Australia not Russia and States have reciprocal arrangements so what's the problem. Replied advising if I provided documentation they would CONSIDER it. Sent a copy of approval and registration etc and eventually I received a letter APPROVING my trip. WTF
I had to get approval to drive my vehicle in the Gestapo State.

Then bugger me I got no more than 10klm over the border and was pulled over by a cop car. First thing they said was is this a V8.
I was tempted to be smart and say, well that's what the effing badge on the back says, but I bit my tongue. He basically pulled out a sticker pad before I had the chance to say anything but luckily I had decided to put the DOT letter in my glovebox. They looked really pissed as they drove off.

Then every day started with sunshine but freaking rain in the arvo, which totally screwed whatever I had planned. Sunshine State my arse.

Went to Fraser which was great but I was just about to go for a swim and a guy yells out NOT to go in the water as its full of stingers and sea snakes, which proved correct when a sea eagle dived bombed in front of me and grabbed a big sea snake. You can only swim in the rivers on an ocean surrounded island !!!!

Got a burger in Brissie outskirts and decided to go to a beach to eat it. But all I could find was feaking smelly mudflats for as far as I could see. Beaches my arse. Bugger me what next, one of the many cyclones or hailstorms. I then decided I needed to get out of this s.....hole and immediately cut short my plans and did so.

It's all yours mate :D .

1886, you do realise that Perth is in WA, not QLD, right? It's like your capital or something, if you can call it that. Bwahahahahahaha

Bwahahahaha absolute gold.

Also the stingers and cyclone are a NQ thing, and the beaches are very nice in the SE corner of the state. Seems we have a QLD hater for some reason.

Funny thing is wa has some truly beautiful country just like everywhere else in aus.
(At least where I've been in the north)
But it's the only state I've received a twenty minute lecture on the dangers of driving while drinking an ice coffee!!
I reckon every state territory has its good and bad points! :drinks:

Keep talking young fella, we're building a wall and making you Mexicans pay for it. Problem is we contracted the work out to the Queenslanders and we know how slow they are. They keep blaming W.A for all the delays cause everything takes 4 days....

Dude, what the hell are you on about. Clearly you have smoked too much gunpowder along with a few others  and it's no wonder shooters get the short stick.

'74 to '80 in South Hedland :-)
Baler Primary School and South Hedland High.
27b Clam Court, good times as a kid.
Back then we were one street from the Bush, where we spent much of our time. They were just starting to clear it and lay in the underground services when we went to Perth. I expect it's all built up by now.

I doubt it was very pleasant for adults back then, pretty much everybody was an alcoholic. It's where I grew up seeing neighbours and friends dealing with alcohol-fueled domestic violence. I believe it's the reason I never got involved with alcohol.

I did go through a few times when I was working in the Kimberley in the early nineties, didn't look very nice then, but a huge step up over Meeka :-)

Just had a look on Google Earth and our house has been bulldozed, about time too. Was an old timber-framed, asbestos-lined cyclone-proofed house up on stumps. Our 500m walk to Baler was through bush, now it's all houses.

I first got into firearms as soon as we moved to Perth, when mum got us into the Police & Citizens Youth Clubs and Army Cadets. But times changed pretty quickly around the early eighties regarding firearms. We moved to country SA where hunting and shooting became everything to me. But moving back to Perth, getting a non-competition rifle licence was not easy, but much easier than trying to get an open licence, unless you knew property owners. Many people joined rifle clubs to get licenced, then went hunting with their club-licenced firearms, which was illegal. I had people advising me to do the same, but I already had a handgun licence - too much to lose in my opinion. On the other hand, handguns were very easy to get into so I got into IPSC instead of hunting. My brother sent me some of my rifles across which I swapped to my dealer for IPSC stuff.

Unless you know property owners in WA, or are interested in competition shooting, I don't see any value in owning rifles there. I don't know if having property letters from interstate is acceptable in WA, but I doubt it. ACT is similar, no hunting except on private property, which is hard for hunters that hunt in NSW. I would recommend contacting WA Firearms and ask them what is involved. I was told (by Firearms Branch) that you can't maintain a WA licence if you don't own any firearms, I expect they lied to me, but if you can keep your licence I would do so - having to get it back again would be a royal pain in the arse.

Be aware that firearm and ammunition storage is different to everywhere else. Bullets and brass are classed as "ammunition", requiring the same level of security as your firearms, and requiring a licence to possess. You can only possess ammo components for firearms you have on your licence. Borrowing other people's firearms requires adding them to your licence.
