Pump engine under water.

So, with all the rain we've been having we haven't had to pump water for a week. But we forgot the pump was still at the dam...and was under two-feet of water!
We dragged it out yesterday but I haven't decided how to approach it just yet.
I'm thinking I'll drain the crankcase, put in a litre of diesel and slosh it all around to try to clean it out. Pull the plug and spray WD40 into the cylinder to break up any water in the ring grooves, then drain the diesel overnight, fill it up with fresh oil, run it for maybe ten minutes to clean out all the galleries, then drain and refill it with fresh oil.

Anybody had to deal with something similar, I'm sure it happens a lot

I want to get the water out of the bottom end before I start turning the engine over, so I haven't pulled it to see if the cylinder is full of water.
And I don't want to let air in until I'm ready to fix it. I have to do the water pump and timing belt on the Landcruiser before I can tackle the pump.

If it is a little side valve pump set they are not hard to pull down clean and reassemble

I would suggest sooner rather than later is best. Less time for stuff to start corroding.

up here it's more likely to be under 3ft of dust, leaves and ash. Shouldn't worried about pulling it out (the pump that is) just bottled the water and sent it up here...

Oil and water make a nice sludge in my experience. I would be removing the valve cover to clean the top end as well.

What motor do you have? GX Honda etc.

Yep, I'll be doing that. It's a Honda engine.

Get a can or two of CO Contact Cleaner and squirt the sh!t out of it.

I would do as has been suggested. Valve cover off, it may have a gasket (good) or be siliconed on (annoying to clean up), and clean the valve train. This will of course put any rubbish in the crankcase. Then flush the cases as you intend. Electrical contacts on ignition components and flywheel may need a touch up with sandpaper or a points file etc. Then I would give them a squirt of lanolin.

Carby will need a strip down, but they are a simple Keihin, so not hard to do. Just be careful when taking the bowl off, as it can be the retained for the float pin. The pin will come out easily though, when the bowl is out the way. Watch for the spring on the needle. Drain the fuel tank too.

You're pretty well onto it Blade. Def clean out the intake tract as GQ suggested, remove the exhaust too to ensure no crap is sitting around the exhaust valves etc.
Your mech know how and approach will have sort this one out no dramas me thinks

All sorted now.
Drained about 250mm of water out of the crankcase, and the cylinder/carb/air cleaner were brim full. Valve cover was fine oddly enough.
Put three fills of oil through it until it was coming out clean.
