Had a bit of a tidy up in the shed and threw out a heap of stuff I was keeping for Justin Case (turns out he wasn't needed......yet).

Dragged out my tillering tree for bowmaking and had a bit of a desultory play with a project bow I was given - it was a decent longbow that came from a well known maker which ended up with a bit of a problem, so it was given to me to see if I could resurrect it. Hopefully will get a bit more done when I get some holidays, but at least I can now do a bit when I want, rather than having to move a heap of crap around to get to what I need.

Snuck out to the olds as they're away for a few days and sat over a rabbit warren. Realised I need to make up a few blinds or a gillie suit to have a decent chance of success with the air rifle as it's so dry it's very hard moving around quietly even sitting still. Was sitting there wondering if I could get away with subsonic .22WMR out of a tree stand as it's a little too close to the road for my liking, and there's horses nearby that I don't want to spook (gotta keep the neighbours happy!).

Spent a bit of time doing some e-scouting in both new areas and areas I've been close to but not visited yet. Have a few plans for the coming winter so working towards ticking a few of them off if I can.

Haven't had this rifle out for over 2 yrs so I'm keen to see how it performs on some hogs, loaded up some 103gr ELD-X's as well. :drinks:

A mate put a new set of tyres on his car last week. I took a ute load of firewood up to him yesterday and helped him replace the rear struts and springs. We took it for a test drive afterwards and it was mint. He rang this arvo saying he'd broken down in Moe. So I went up there and it sounds to me like it's done a rod bearing (hell of a racket), so now he's looking for another engine for the thing (2010 Subaru wagon). He'd gone up to his mum's to prune a big blackwood hanging over the neighbour's fence, so I towed him around to her place (only 3km) and we cut the tree down. Then we loaded the bigger stuff in the van and brought it home for firewood. If the engine had gone two weeks ago he might not have bothered doing tyres and suspension, but it's a decent car so it's worth getting an engine if we can find one. He was given it with a blown engine years ago as a parts car for his other Subaru but it was so good he had an engine put in and it became his primary drive.

I know those cars well, spent a lot of time with them when new. Overall pretty solid cars with good ground clearance and all wheel drive. However the 3.6L six had some oil consumption issues and the 2.5 motors were ok but the CVT transmissions don't last. They are a "sealed" unit and typically go bang by 120k miles. If one can work around those issues, again they are pretty solid machines and safe as well with the multi ring cage supporting the roof.

I'll pass this onto him. I know nothing about them other than from when I replaced a head gasket on my brother-in-law's Leone over twenty years ago. That one impressed with it's towing ability and grunt but was horrendous on fuel. This 2010 looks like the same basic engine but with more junk packed in around it, doesn't look like it'd be much fun doing a head on this one, the Leone was pretty easy to get to.

I did notice the heavy crash cage around the car when we were doing the struts, about two-inch tube all the way around it. His second Subaru is a '92 sedan which I personally think is the much nicer vehicle of the two, it's a manual for a start, but it has some sort of gadget in the transfer case that automatically alters the ratio of engine power going to front and rear axles apparently?

The old 2.5 motors in the mid 2000s ate head gaskets, by 2010 as I recall it's still the same engine just evolved and upgraded. The big issue in 2010 was the early CVT transmissions, they went bang enough Subaru of America was replacing them free out of warranty up to 120k miles. The 3.6L six with a regular auto transmission has a lot more horsepower and torque.

As I recall at the time with the reinforced cage on the Outback, it could take 4 to 5 times the weight of the car on the roof before it started to give way. The other Subarus have the same set up. I got to test out this gear for real about 5 years ago at work when I was sent into a 45 degree angle hill in a Subaru Forester and got airborne, barrel rolled sideways and then fell to earth and rolled multiple times. The roof held and the car once rolled over, fired up and was still driveable. I was sore for about 2 weeks and got a bruise but other than that, good. If I had been in some general motors car or something, things probably would not have turned out so well.

Subarus are strong cars, they have their foibles but overall strong cars they are.

By 2010, the only Subaru with the ability to manual alter power going from front to back was the Subaru STI. They let electronics figure all that out these days.

Dressed out the sambar hind I shot at sunset last night. :D

These little Opinel folders are just fantastic value for money. Did the job on the sambar and fallow as well.

Got her in an ambush. Set up about 4.30 in some bracken with a seat. She came out of the thick sh1t to cross a clearing/saddle. (Abt 6.10pm)
There were two. Facing away from me. I waited. One walked off and she was slowly following, having a nibble as the went. When I gently blew my "fox blaster'" she stopped to look in my direction. She was angling away just slightly so i hit her just behind the shoulder from about 110yards using some rough shooting stix. (I had left mine at home)

She staggered then wobbled off into the thick sh1t.

I packed up my gear and waited 3-4 minutes. Headed down to search for her. Got pretty close to where I shot her and the resident stag trotted out in front of me, perhaps 30yards. I'd chambered a fresh round incase she needed a finisher, so I lifted the rifle and pulled when the + centred on his shoulder.......nothing, the safety was on..... :violin:

Well the freezer will be chockers in a couple a of days.
Sooo, perhaps it's better I didn't shoot the stag. Next time. :unknown:

We found her early this morning in some high/thick bracken about 50-60 yards from where she was shot.

My share is currently hanging in the home brew fridge. Gave my mate a back leg. One shoulder (exit) was badly damaged so lost that. Bullet wasn't recovered unfortunately.

Nice one OB! Sambar have a (deserved) reputation of being super sneaky, but occasionally do stuff that makes you think 'huh?'. Bet you weren't expecting to see the stag after a shot and walking up like that. He'll just be bigger next time

Pete
that's a fair whack of fish right there! Reckon it would bbq up ok :sarcasm:

How high you aiming with the FOC? I played around with it, but only shot one goat with a highish FOC, so be interested in seeing how they perform for you.

Bugman
any trip around the sun is good! Happy (belated) birthday

Skinned and packed down the goats I shot last weeked. This is the first time I've really aged any goat meat, most have been overnight/2 days at most. Interestingly, there was almost no smell as I was skinning, only when I was cleaning up at the end and water got involved.

Took the howa for a walk yesterday to re-check my zero. A couple of the last few shots were sub-optimal  so I wanted to check I hadn't knocked the scope of something. Ducked up a quiet gully where I've had a camera before and found a heap of pig and/or wombat sign. Still not entirely convinced it's pigs, it wasn't turned up, but I've never seen that amount of wombat scratchings (literally acres over the whole gully). I'm wondering if because of the drought conditions, the wombats are pushed to dig deeper and more to get a feed? As I parked the car I found a very fresh rub tree, probably from the night before. Might have to put the trail cam back up again over the scrape that is 200m further uphill. I pushed on a bit further than I intended and was honked by a small sambar, then as I was dropping off the small ridge into the gully bottom through some thick dogwood I bumped a handful a sambar from about 25m away. After taking a quick siter shot, I went back to pick up the bit of cardboard and bumped put up another deer on just down the ridge from where the others had tee-d off from :unknown:

Drove my girlfriend's mum up to Warragul for their annual student nurses reunion at the Black Tie Restaurant, a bunch of ninety-year-old ex-nursing students get together to catch up over a feed every year. They've been doing these reunion lunches for more than fifty years and the only ones they missed were during covid. Rose's mum still wears the same name tag she wore as a student nurse in 1951.

Had to wait for her from 1045 until 1345 so walked around to In Season Hunting to see if they had blackpowder in stock. Nope, so I walked back again and read my book :-)

Been a pretty quiet day so far.

[Late last night]

Removed yet another Stimsons Pyfon from a Glue-Pad in the house....Sigh.
This time, it was a Glue Pad in the living room; the other 5 have been in my bedroom next door.
Another late-night session; dribbling vegetable oil over the snake to get the glue to release, and gently peeling a peeved Pyfon off...
And then rub it in paper towels to get most of the oil off...
I live a weird life..

Cute little thing.
Turned it into a TreeSnake, but I fear it will soon revert to it's bad ways, and resume Pyfoneering through the house again...
This is the 6th caught on Glue-Pads in the past 6 months inside the house.
We bought the damn things for catching mice, and yet we have more luck catching Pyfons...

Ahhh well; at least it isnt Bitey...

Last couple of days actually.
I developed a new load for one of my 30.06s few weeks ago.
Sooo,
Pulled 40 bullets,
Neck sized the cases,
Dropped additional powder in them.
Seated bullets again.

Yesterday, completed butchering the hind I shot last week. Got some rear leg in the slow cooker today. :D

Went and got the paperwork i need to go over and sign for my new job. Saw a fallow buck not far from the new vineyard,on the road, though it was a roo at first intent on committing suicide in front of the triton, but it was a a little buck in velvet.
Then went fishing at Sugars Beach, caught 4 nice salmon trout and one good mullet that I jagged with the metal lure. Jessica and I had them on toast for lunch, bloody delicious.
Also working on an elm short bow and a bone tipped harpoon when I'm feeling like it
