Wed: Took a spill off my mountain bike acting half my age
Thurs: Spent 5 hours in ED getting xrays on a suspected fracture in my wrist. Thankfully it was only soft tissue damage which left me with 2 sore wrists, a sore shoulder and bruised jaw (thought I'd dislocated it at the time)

Fri: Took off for an o/nighter to a very well known forrest for fallow, a new spot for me so a mate who's hunted there a bit hooked me up with a few suggestions. I had a 10-15min standoff with 3 sambar at about 40m and could possibly have shot the hind that was honking at me, but let them go. Bumped another mob of sambar before climbing back up the ridge via a creek bottom I'd hoped would be a nice open gully. Wrong on all counts, was very tight and full of brush and the climb out was a little harder than I thought it would be. The only grace was finding a cast fallow antler (probably last years going on age) and a heap of sign, both fallow and sambar. Was almost back at the car when I found a pair of lyrebirds having a call off about 75m apart - the understorey was too dry to get close enough to see them, but I found a number of cleared dance floors and their repertoire was amazing to hear: Black cockies, grey and pied currawongs, magpie, kookaburra, grey shrike and possibly a car alarm. Also bumped a very dishevelled sambar that I only got a brief glimpse of before getting back to the car.

Headed round to a very large open area my mate has shot a few fallow in, and waited out the last 30min of light but nothing doing. Ended up camping there for the night which may have been a mistake as it was somewhat colder than the creek bottom I'd originally thought to pull up in. My car consistently reads higher than actual, and it felt as cold as any frosty -5 morning in NZ.

Had heard dogs barking in the evening which were a fair chance of wild dogs - too far to houses, though there was at least one other campsite in the larger area and this area is baited/trapped heavily.
After a cold start, I packed up and headed back to civilisation and then onto check out a couple of other potential and somewhat closer spots. One I know of from watching videos on the pewtube, and was glad to find I can get there in my 2wd car (in the dry anyway), so I've got definite fallow, sambar and goats to chase there, along with a sniff of reds. The other spot was a little different, bigger more open with taller trees but thicker brush and understorey.
Arrived home a little after lunch yesterday, all in all a good trip with some new areas covered and some more to have a look at with about a dozen sambar and 7 fallow spotted (on the way out in farmland unfortunately).
