Tikka make quality, accurate rifles.

Not to say they're the only option, people have their personal brand preference. But a Tikka would be a good option.

Both good first choices.

What are you doing, hunting or target shooting?

.22 is great for 50m paper target shooting. Good rabbit hunter as well.

.223 is a much longer range cartridge. 500m or so. Good for target shooting and hunting on the smaller side. Can't shoot it at the indoor ranges though so that's something.

Both are suitable for hunting rabbits and foxes. The biggest difference is range.

.22lr range is limited to about 50m or 60m

.223 is several hundred metres.

Now .22lr is cheaper to shoot, but .223 lets you do so much more.

On the subject of 22 vs 223 range... How large is the property?

What ranges are you normally coming up on rabbits and foxes at?

Well Dad has 12000 acres near Tenterfield and we normally see foxes around the chook house most afternoons lately or so Dad says!! I'm in my final year of law @ Bond Uni and so I'm not home all the time at the moment but will be moving back into the area as soon as I graduate.. :drinks: I think dad would like me to bring a fella home to help on the farm but that hasn't happened yet.

Spent sometime on the weekend looking @ some Rifles at my local store, they told me that I should be looking at Tikka or a Sako as they would do the job well.

They told me to stay clear of rifles with floor plates and sub /calibers what ever they might be?

I'm sold on buying a 223 of some type with a heavy twist rate
any Ideas

New Tikka $1000 + scope.....Sako $2000+ + scope? Sales person advice.

Very basic advice here but I guess it may come down to a few things like:
budget ? Don't feel pressured to spend heaps on new and fancy if you don't need or want to. Save a few hundred and there is your ammo for ages.

What feels right to you when you pick it up and put it to your shoulder in a shooting position ? Wont know unless you try.
Do you have experience or have someone like your dad or a shooting friend to assist ?
Reading about it will help but having someone there, who isn't a sales person would be good.

You could pick up a Tikka T3 .223 cal in great condition used for $800 maybe with decent scope $1200
You said you have your PTA submitted. Did you submit one for .223 or 22lr or both?

If sussing out second hand and haggling isn't your thing then a new rifle package may be worth while.

Someone on this forum may have a good used one ?

Honestly sounds like your sales guy couldn't be stuffed or didn't know what he was talking about.

1) A basic Tikka is about 1K. The started Sako is about $2,300. Quite a different to say just get one or the other.

"Just get a Commodore or a Ferrari"

Both a good rifles, the Sako is very high quality, but yeah, doesn't sound like he was trying to be all that helpful.

2) For the floor plate, there is no reason to avoid them, they're just a different design. Internal box magazine vs clip in/out external magazine.

Winchester, Ruger, Remington and plenty more make rifle models with floor plates.

3) I dunno WTF he's even mentioning sub-calibre's to a new shooter for, especially when you're looking at a .223. Has nothing to do with anything in your situation

Sounds like he learned a new word for the day to sound smart and wanted to crack it out.

I'll take a guess and say you're not wanting to spend Sako money on your first rifle? In that case a Tikka is a good option (despite the rest of his nonsense advice)
