Targeted advertising

Post by Chappo » 06 May 2019, 11:33 am

Regarding recent discussions on scams and targeted advertising, I’ve noticed more than often that the ads on this forum can reflect what topics are currently being discussed.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing and the people that manage the forum would be silly not to include ads that they think suit their clientele but I laughed this morning when the top of page ads were for golf clubs!!! I wonder if these clubs are for sport or home security

What scares me - is that some advertising I’m seeing is coming from verbal discussions I’ve had - nothing to do with topics or IT searches...bloody hell, if my phones really monitoring me - I’ll probably start getting penis enlargement adds again...soon.

If it worries you than you need to make some changes to your Google account settings.

It's tied in with Google voice assistant

If memory serves me right, Google/account/security settings.

Ok ... I found the article that I was looking for.
It's worth a read if your interested in how your phone is listening to you.

Here's the all important extract.
"First, you’ll need to be signed into your Gmail or Google account.

Once you’ve done that, type “history.google.com/history” into your web browser.

You’ll be taken to a hub which contains your entire digital footprint, so be careful, it could make for some interesting reading"

Hi all,

A bit of info for those interested, or with the inclination to go find out more themselves.

Advertising on the site is delivered via Google Ads. We also use Google Analytics.

(This has been the case since day one, and we do not serve ads through any other provider or use any other analytics package. Just FYI.)

The advertising which "follows" you is known as Remarketing.

In a nutshell, the way this works is:

  • You Google about "blue fish"
  • You visit Site-A about "blue fish"
  • You receive a cookie from Google about that search/site visit.
  • You visit Site-B, possibly from performing another search
  • If this site serves Google Ads, you may see an advertisement for "blue fish"

That's the most basic of explanations, of course, but if you're interested in learning more about it for peace of mine, or whatever reason, 'Google Ads' and 'Google Analytics' are the two things to research.

:drinks:
See you on the firing line.

I am technology challenged...infact, a trail cam is my hi tech...

This explains why, i see ebay adverts for "scope rings" on here, within a day or so of me having searched for 'scope rings' on ebay...
