Calculation air con running costs

Post by Blr243 » 24 Oct 2019, 10:53 am

My swag air con is currently plugged into mains and it’s cooling capacity is rated at 1.49 kw. The sticker on the side says power input 580 watts I’m guessing the 1.49 kw has nothing to do with power consumption ? Can someone tell what it costs in dollars to run this thing for 4 hours ?

580w is 0.58 kw/hr so depending on how much you pay per kwh on your bill.

0.58 * hrs * kwhCost

Also note the compressor will turn on and off dependant on thermostat and how big your room is, what's the ambient temp. this can make it cheaper

Probably around a dollar or less for the 4hrs. The 1.49 is cooling capacity...so how long it takes to drop the temp for the volume.

Awesome. Thanks ziad. At that rate I shall feel no guilt about chewing up the farms electricity and the dog and I can be cool for the rest of the arvo

That’s pretty small mate. I’d not fret on the consumption from something that size.
We pay .27c per kWh in Tas or thereabouts.

The one in my house is 24kw...(it’s an ex office block unit) you don’t want our power bill.

Thanks TT. So .58 times .27 times 4 hours is .62 cents. Is that how the maths go ?

Pretty much mate yes - but as Z eluded with compressor switching on and off - values are normally an average. You can buy a consumption meter from jaycar for about $12 - in line plug - tells you exact power use. Very handy.

Yep... but if you have a room small enough and the compressor turns on/off them probably less

I was involved in marketing a retrofitted device which made Aircons and Coolrooms run more efficient by working off the cool air supply rather than the room temperature and tested my domestic unit and it cost less than $2 a day running for 24 hrs in the middle of summer at 18 deg

Others have already covered the cost and mentioned a wattage meter.
Can you answer for me though - what is a 'swag air con'??? :unknown:

A small air con Often called a wall air con or window rattler. I call it a swag air con because it’s jammed up against one end of my swag and blowing cold air thru the screen mesh
