Yet again,, Wine and associated bullsh!t

Post by Die Judicii » 17 Dec 2019, 8:12 pm

Just been drinking a bottle of wine,, and in a moment of aberration, read the label.

Apart from the usual drivel and palaver,,,,,,
I see hi lighted "Bin 95"

Which made me think,,,,,,,,,,,, how many f@ckin times have I seen this on differing brands and types of wine ? :unknown:

Is "Bin 95 (or 96, 97, 98) a magical number that all wineries have to flog off their everyday ordinary slops, ??

And what of Bin numbers 1 to 94 ????
Are they dismal failures that killed off countless 3rd world country drinkers ??????????

I went and looked on the net I was wondering if it had some meaning
some Australian wines have bin names (à la Lindemans Bin 65 Chardonnay). Originally, bin numbers referred to a storage area in a wine cellar where wines were held before being sold. Lots of wine (in tank or bottle) were numbered for identification purposes—which is very helpful before the wine is labeled—so referring to a bin number became shorthand for the wine stored there.

These days, bin numbers don't refer to a storage location as much as they indicate a wine made in a consistent style. Like any brand name, a bin number is an attempt to give a wine buyer a way to remember a particular wine and its style.

This kind of snobbery found it's true expression recently in art where a banana duct taped to a framed canvas sold for $120 000.
