Anecdotal cat implications

Post by Ziege » 06 Apr 2020, 1:08 pm

So there have been reports over the last three days that big cats, most notably in new york zoo, have not only caught but exhibit symptoms and are infectious for covid19,

I went to school in a military town, one of my school friends, now back in the USA for obviously decades, has now got the only income in their household after his wife, a veterinarian nurse was sent home and told to self isolate as the many cats they have been treating have exhibited symptoms that can be described as covid19.

Anecdotal I know but if I lived in a densely populated area like Sydney with many cases of this virus I would be keeping the furry little bastards as far away as possible from me and my home.

Or better yet, get rid of the damn cat, they're a declared pest and domestic cats kill for the fun of it. Anyone who wasn't already keeping them inside is selfish and useless

Yep, nothing like throwing around a bit more fearmongering, hey;
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00984-8
"With the coronavirus spreading rapidly around the world, some have raised concerns about whether it can pass between pets and people. So far, there have been a few reports of pets being infected: a cat in Belgium and two dogs in Hong Kong. “Cats and dogs are in close contact with humans, and therefore it is important to understand their susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 for COVID-19 control,” write the authors of the latest study1, a preprint posted on bioRxiv on 31 March, which has not been peer reviewed."

Yes, they can get the virus, it doesn't cause them much distress and there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that they can transmit the virus to humans. The tiger in NY is NOT contagious at all, to anyone or anything. According to the circulars that are coming through our Veterinary Pathology lab, ferrets are not a risk factor either but civets are most possibly. A lot more research is being done on this subject, but a lot has already been done. Remember to follow good hygiene after handling your pets and if you have symptoms avoid contact with your pet just as you would any pther family member, Cheers.

Appreciate your input mate but veterinary staff in the NY state and Maryland state area aren't being sent home to self isolate for no reason. My old friend Josh has no reason to be lying to be about the severity of it

So the human handler have it to the tigers and they can't give it back to humans.

I do wonder if somehow it wasn't a bat but a different animal that was eaten but infected by cronavirus.
