Obviously if your keen you can do that now. But a section would promote it. I know mods will not have a sales section. And for good reasons

TassieTiger wrote:Maybe I’m ignorant - okay, that’s a given - but why not a for sale section? If firearms have to go through a dealer anyway, what is the difference between usedG and a members forum? Seems weird to me - a free internet site can advertise at a cost, anyone can access same site, phone or email the seller direct...etc. what am I missing?
Last I checked (usual disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, etc.) in Victoria it's illegal to advertise the sale of a firearm unless you're a dealer. It's legal in all other states, but some states require things like transferring dealers numbers, seller license numbers to be displayed, etc.
We have previously had a 'For Sale' section, but frankly it was more of a headache that it was worth.
Though the requirements were made clear, people posted things from inappropriate states, or with incomplete information.
The section was an absolute magnet for spammers as well. Spammers are obviously searching for places to post there crap; selling fake passports, watches, hacking services and whatever else. The classifieds section had spammers coming in in droves when it was there to be found. We were disapproving and deleting more accounts than there were legitimate users using the section, and it became a huge time sink for moderators while adding relatively little to the site.
Things could change down the road, but I don't see a for sale section being available in the foreseeable future.
.
A wanted section is an interesting thought, though. As you say, no legal issues. The pessimist in me suspects that inevitably people are going to treat it like a 'for sale' section, but I'm not opposed to giving it a try.
Let me give it a little more thought, but I think I'd be happy to give it a go. As long as it doesn't raise the same problems as the original classifieds section it could be good.

My thoughts at the end of the reply there are still the same. OB raised this with me a while back and it's taken longer than I'd planned to get back to it.
Consider it firmly on the radar now. Update to follow.

Because it's the advertising of a firearm for sale without a dealer licence that's illegal.
TassieTiger wrote:Does that mean The owners of usedG, OzG sales, etc have dealers licences ? I searched but could not find out who owned the sites...given a sale has to progress to a dealer it sounds weird to have one state out of sync. Anyway - Adter has filled my knowledge gap.
I’m in full support of a wanted section.
