Ha ha,

Was more thinking:
Wanted dies for 270 or cheap scales.

Obviously if your keen you can do that now. But a section would promote it. I know mods will not have a sales section. And for good reasons

Maybe I’m ignorant - okay, that’s a given - but why not a for sale section? If firearms have to go through a dealer anyway, what is the difference between usedG and a members forum? Maybe - there is an answer in that only members could view for sales, rather than full public access? Seems weird to me - a free internet site can advertise at a cost, anyone can access same site, phone or email the seller direct...etc. what am I missing?

Tassie Tiger,,

One or two states did have restrictions and it was tried in the past and created a few issues. Perhaps better if Aster answers that one.

See here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=593

And here is a snippet of mine from a previous conversation:

Last I checked (usual disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, etc.) in Victoria it's illegal to advertise the sale of a firearm unless you're a dealer. It's legal in all other states, but some states require things like transferring dealers numbers, seller license numbers to be displayed, etc.

We have previously had a 'For Sale' section, but frankly it was more of a headache that it was worth.

Though the requirements were made clear, people posted things from inappropriate states, or with incomplete information.

The section was an absolute magnet for spammers as well. Spammers are obviously searching for places to post there crap; selling fake passports, watches, hacking services and whatever else. The classifieds section had spammers coming in in droves when it was there to be found. We were disapproving and deleting more accounts than there were legitimate users using the section, and it became a huge time sink for moderators while adding relatively little to the site.

Things could change down the road, but I don't see a for sale section being available in the foreseeable future.
.

A wanted section is an interesting thought, though. As you say, no legal issues. The pessimist in me suspects that inevitably people are going to treat it like a 'for sale' section, but I'm not opposed to giving it a try.

Let me give it a little more thought, but I think I'd be happy to give it a go. As long as it doesn't raise the same problems as the original classifieds section it could be good.

My thoughts at the end of the reply there are still the same. OB raised this with me a while back and it's taken longer than I'd planned to get back to it.

Consider it firmly on the radar now. Update to follow.

Aster - thanks. That's the first time I’ve seen that RE Vic laws standing out differently to other states RE “for sale” items. Absolutely amazing and makes you wonder why the discrepancy and what might happen if a known second hand internet site was challenged - my initial thoughts would see a magistrate asking wtf but I’m just an opinionated tech, not a lawyer.
Thanks for clarifying Aster.

The "i need/im after" approach might be the way to go...
My initial thoughts are it would make the bot driven spam easy to spot, flag & delete...

Also, ive always wondered how other sites get around the advertising laws but you cant...?

Im obviously still inept at this quoting bizo...ffs...!!!

Do you need a licence to advertise? Mm not sure, probably. I remember some states was pretty easy in vic harder.

What I suggested some months ago is a "Wanted" section. Strictly no ammo, powder, firearms. Etc.

There must heaps of members that would like to buy used reloading gear, camping gear, knives who knows what. Aster would know but a lot of members look, but not often comment. A lot of lookers.

Does that mean The owners of usedG, OzG sales, etc have dealers licences ? I searched but could not find out who owned the sites...given a sale has to progress to a dealer it sounds weird to have one state out of sync. Anyway - Adter has filled my knowledge gap.

I’m in full support of a wanted section.

Re: What is going on with EG?

I would like to add my voice to the preceding few comments.
It would be a good idea to have a specific topic where forum members could express an interest in obtaining a specific item that does not require a licence that they are seeking.
Even for an item can only be obtained via a licenced dealer then forum members can respond with helpful advice on where to go.
The reality is that it already happens sporadically in a round about way within threads and all a specific topic would do is organise the expressions of interest in a specific location and give them a longer life.

No, every ad on there includes a dealer's licence.

I vaguely recall recently that a Victoria has, or was planning to relax this rule to allow us to advertise firearms again, I'd have to check.

Not looking to extend this discussion as an option for the forum, Aster has made it clear but for curiosity sake - in theory BR - if you pre nominated a dealer and utilised their licence no, you might be allowed to advertise, based on following the other IT sites that do advertise firearms? Or have I misinterpreted?
