On the subject of "uploads" limits.

Hey Mods,,,,,,,,,, How come you are persisting with limits on uploads re pics ??

Fair Dinkum,,,,, to upload a pic in association with a post,,,, ( 750 kb Max )

And yet to place a pic associated with an advert on Used Guns they have a generous Max of 2 Mb.

What is the go ????????????? :unknown:

Because they pay $25 a post over on usedguns. Here we don't pay a cent unless we want to.

Space is always expensive, and it adds up quick. I use google pics, its free and easy. Just make a shared album and link the image.

There are 4 simple ways of ensuring pics are small enough to post. I think the size limit here is 750kb. Some forums have limits as low as 250kb.

1. Take the pic further away than usual, then crop it.

2. Take the pic as usual then text it to yourself and down load it. Will be about 400kb then.

3. Some cameras will have a setting to reduce the image size/quality. Have a look at the camera settings

4. Some mobile have an app that does it.

There are plenty of cropping / reduction apps available. They're the quickest and easiest way. When you crop and save, they create their own folder in your phone so after uploading you simply delete the folder and all files contained.

On a PC just download this free image resizer and you can shrink an image down to under the limit easy . https://download.cnet.com/Multiple-Imag ... 86287.html
A JPEG image will come down smaller than some other formats and still have reasonable quality.
On a Phone I can't help .

Mate there is an app called photo editor which works on IPhone. Someone on here actually put me onto it a few years back. Easy to use, even for a tech quarmby like me.

Correct. Disk space is one of the primary expenses in hosting for Aster.

As some additional info for anyone who's interested:

A photo straight from a modern mobile phone is in the neighbourhood of 4mb, and contains a lot of info that is wasted online.

The same photo, when resized and optimized for web could be 1/10th of the site or less. Probably 300kb - 400kb.

To allow unoptimized images to be uploaded is literally burning space/cash. So limits have to be enforced.

I know Aster is wanting to have this optimization process taken care of automatically, so members can upload any size images and the forum will do the resize work, but I believe this is still a ways off. He'll post an update when there is one.

For now it will have to stay the same.

Another tip when posting images from a PC is after you have the image down to size open the file Properties , click on details , then at the bottom there is make a copy removing all personal information . Click on that then click on make a copy with all personal properties removed , click OK . This will make a file with the same name but with copy in the file name but with no identifying data . Delete the original and upload the copy .

I use this FREE, on-line tool https://picresize.com/
You can crop the image AND nominate what the final image file size will be.
Best of both worlds.
As has already been said, it's also a good idea to remove the meta-data first.
