Why ebay won't allow gun listings

Post by buster » 30 Mar 2014, 3:15 pm

One for the legal boffins.

This is the ebay policy regarding listings guns for sale

Most weapons can't be sold on eBay because of strict government regulations and international laws. To safeguard the community, we may also ban other related items that are legal to sell outside of eBay.

As I understand it, the bit about "because of strict government regulations" isn't actually right?

You can advertise your guns for sale on usedguns or magazines or whatever. Is there actually any legal reason anyone is aware of why they can't sell them? Or just their policy?

Just curious, seems like it would be a good resource for us LAFO.

ebay policy only as far as I know.

FYI, some snippets on advertising laws from the various state firearms acts are here.

Aside from the law in place I think eBay doesn't want to as a public image concern same as how Facebook is looking at banning it. You could imagine how people would carry on if they saw "murder weapon bought on eBay"

Because these days the general public find the thought and image of guns horrifying, after all guns are designed to kill.

It would also seem that the greater public has forgotten that we would be speaking Japanese if it weren't for our for father's skills using them.

I just hope we have enough army reserves if a ww broke out again, because if they start calling birth dates again we're screwed.

As I read the rules there is no reason they couldn't in most states.

Can't speak for other countries, you'd think it would be kocher in the US though.

Not something they want to be involved in is all I suspect.

Probably not worth their time here in Aus to monitor a firearms advertising section to make sure its all above board anyway.

Usedguns has about 2,800 guns online at the moment. Their ads last for 3 months I think? So it looks like they do about 900 guns a month.

900 items a month is nothing for ebay. They must do hundreds of thousands of listings globally?

For the PR drama it could open not worth their time.

They had the kind of PR problem we're talking about in Bowling for Columbine if you remember?

I can't actually remember which of the big chains it was over there, so won't say the wrong thing...

Anyway, the bit was about a pair of young guys who survived the shooting, and they knew that the kind of bullets used were sold at this particular chain of stores.

Michael Moore went to the store with the cameras and all the works asking them to stop selling the ammo and blah blah blah, and put it into the movie.

I'm sure ebay don't want a repeat.

It was Wal-Mart.

And they stopped selling ammo as a result of it I'm pretty sure.
