What did you do over the weekend?

Post by Oldbloke » 11 Apr 2021, 3:27 pm

What did you do over the weekend shooting, hunting related?

I loaded up 20 rounds for my Win M70 in 30-06. Getting ready for a trip in a few weeks up NE Vic. Hope to get out a few evenings.

And cleaned up the man cave. Lol

Cleaned up all the tools out of my Ute and packed them away. I have a small amount of carpentry work to do mon arv. Then I’m packing my dog gear rifles kayak and quadbike and heading off in such a direction that the only city lights I will see will be in my rear vision mirrors

I'm still playing with .45 Colt loads in the 12ga.
Rose's brother built me a PiD to control the melt pot so I threw 100-odd .452" bullets to test it.

We dropped our first calf of the season on Thursday arvo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F5i_CTCpT4
Mother had some difficulty so we've been keeping a very close eye on baby - smallest cow I've ever seen so far.

Damned cold down here today!

Yeh, I'm rethinking whether to go out next week for a day or overnighter. Bloody cold & wet all of a sudden.

I"ve become a "fine day hunter". :)

Built an enclosed lean to behind the shed, it took 7 days but its all done apart from the concrete slab, that's a job for next week.
Also burnt a heap of junk, I've been feeding the burn heap all day today.

Bought a shotgun.

I dropped one gun of last weekend for some work. Unfortunately that involved being inside a gun shop. Unfortunately i was overcome with a genuine need for another shotgun.
Picked that up, brought it home, showed the wife so she could admire the wood grain and polish.
She has’nt said much.

Out chasing bluefins...........

 I wish...headed down to west coast SA for some long overdue relaxation. Probably won't happen with school holidays though.
I will get out for a quick ocean hunt, albeit in a slightly more humble craft than what's next door.

Got back from my first job in a long time. Things seem to be returning more to normal now, people are over the Bat Flu. Had to fight the traffic through Washington DC, so took longer to get home than expected.

Spring is popping here, a few trees starting to bloom, grass is turning green and starting to grow. Mud is drying up from winter. Kayaking season on the local creek has already started, that runs until about the first weekend in June.

With the volatile spring weather I didn't shoot much in March at all, so yesterday towards the end of the day just did a bit. Tested some 300 Blackout loads and then had some aftermarket Korean Glock magazines to try out. Not impressed. First one jammed right up, metal insert at the feedlips shifted. The other two worked but clearly the OEM Glock magazines are the way to go. Today on Sunday it is rainy and about 17-18C, so probably will work on loading some more 45 ACP and finish up the brass I have for it. With that I should have enough 45 ACP to last for a few years.

A sieve, a dust mask and your in business. You'll have the cheapest mined lead per kg and the most environmentally friendly mine in the country.
Pitch it as rehabilitation, environmental containment removal and recycling, have a good written procedures and hazard controls in place you'll probably have other ranges knocking at your door for your service

I think nowadays, all ranges are aware of the value of their lead deposits.
And I suspect we now require certification to even attempt to remove it.
Once the bullets are collected, they can be sent for recycling, but the spoil is considered toxic waste and must not be removed from the site.

Spoil can easily be treated, A small gravity circuit for the heavier particles and a floatation circuit for the fines would recover 90% of the lead in the soil. It would be a great little project, but like you said Blade, when someone is sitting on something of value the are reluctant to part with it. Like that old bloke down the road with a HQ monaro rusting away in the paddock "na don't wanna sell it, gonna fix it up one day" 20 years later its still sitting there... what's left of it.

These clubs would most likely prefer to let it drift in the wind and contaminate the surrounding area creating a costly clean up down the track when legislation eventually dictates that it needs to be done.
