Skull identification

Post by bladeracer » 18 Jul 2021, 6:51 pm

Can anybody tell me what this might be?
Has me stumped :-)
Found it in a paddock the other night while birthing a little bull.
Picked it up thinking it might be an emu.

What was throwing me is that what I took to be the eye sockets are right up against the rear surface of the cranium.
Looking at some pics online now though I can see that the eyes are far forward of what appear to be the optic nerve entry points.

Seen plenty of wombats here, alive and dead (quarry trucks), but never found a skeleton yet.

No saggital crest so not a carnivore. If it has multiple small holes in its palette then it's a marsupial (pouched animal).

I agree, most likely wombat. But koala sculls are similar.

They are indeed similar and it's hard to tell from the photos as some of it is missing and hard to see the proportions. Wombat skulls are longer, pointer and flatter towards the nose. You can see it in the front facing picture.

Koala skulls are more rounded.

Found a picture of a wombat and koala skull so you can see the difference.
