I didn't buy a varmint rifle. I already have a heavy as weathetby vanguard 22-250 for that sort of thing. I bought a howa superlite. 5.74lb scoped and empty.

Finally finished work a bit earlier today, not much daylight at the end of the day at the moment.
Took the red dot off my 10/22 and put a new scope on it. Sighted it in, and 200 rounds later, it got too dark. So cool. Just the standard barrel, in a Magpul stock. How I wish I could have a bigger mag than the ten shot though.

Took my 8yo daughter and went to pull the trail cam today after work. I was pleasantly impressed by how much she's picked of my ramblings each time we go out somewhere (fishing, walking, game cameras etc.). She started pointing stuff out to me (scat, tracks, weird fungi and the like), some of which I hadn't seen and was often right and very interested in the bush and it's happenings. I was explaining how and why the deer were moving from up in the gullies down into the farmland to feed and I was hoping to use the game camera to work out times of movement and how many/what was around and she immediately asked "is this is where you want to wait for them so you can shoot them?"

After looping around a bit we ended up on the same track we'd walked in on, and I asked her which way to go and she immediately pointed in the right direction and when I asked how she knew pointed out that we'd walked in uphill. I have vivid memories of doing similar things with my dad at a similar age (fishing related rather than hunting) but he was/is a student of the bush so hopefully I can pass the same love of it onto her, as well as some great memories like I have.

Nice Pete, are they hard to find? I've only had a couple of encounters with rails.

Hit the local creek chasing the last few days of trout season in the hopes that the spawners would be out and about but the day didn't pan out like planned with fish free rising to caddis (I think) and they weren't at all interested in big hairy things (the fly, not me  ) but happily took any white caddisy looking thing. Ended up with 10 or so to 28cm which is typical creek size for around here and missed/didn't strike on a stack more.

Hooked up my new Moroka rifle sling, it took a bit of mucking around to get it somewhere I was happy with and I can see some modification of the gun boot coming up as the strap comes off one side, so causes the boot to get all scrunched up and twisted under load. It will also take a little to get used to getting the rifle free without hanging up, it's not difficult but I'll just have to remember to free the butt before trying to shoulder it. Otherwise it looks like it takes a lot of the weight off my shoulders so all good there!!!

Thanks guys. Its a small hobby but I enjoy it.

Today I wandered down the beach to flick metal lures at salmon trout. Before I went I made sure I set some marks on my rod for 25cm ( what I THOUGHT was the legal minimum ). Worked my up and down the beach a few times, had a couple reach the 25cm mark and threw a lot back just under before I realised that 21cm was the real limit ffs
Anyway ended up with a few for lunch which was a nice change

I finished a small fish fillet knife to pair with the big meat slicer, so I gave them both a tatt each to celebrate.

The big one is from a solid chainsaw bar and the little one is from the skin of a laminated saw bar

No, not a pro, It's just something I have always had an interest in. I used to make some knives out of my worn out rasps when I was shoeing horses many moons ago. I met a Master bladesmith at a shooting competition in the U.S a few years ago and he "lit the fire" for me again I suppose. I mostly make them to order.

Well, not today, but yesterday,I shot this 19x19 sambar stag with a 165gn SGK out of my howa superlite offhand from 120m.
Been 22 years since I last hunted sambar and only the second one I've got on the ground. Pretty chuffed ! :D
