Had a bit of a tidy up in the shed and threw out a heap of stuff I was keeping for Justin Case (turns out he wasn't needed......yet).

Dragged out my tillering tree for bowmaking and had a bit of a desultory play with a project bow I was given - it was a decent longbow that came from a well known maker which ended up with a bit of a problem, so it was given to me to see if I could resurrect it. Hopefully will get a bit more done when I get some holidays, but at least I can now do a bit when I want, rather than having to move a heap of crap around to get to what I need.

Snuck out to the olds as they're away for a few days and sat over a rabbit warren. Realised I need to make up a few blinds or a gillie suit to have a decent chance of success with the air rifle as it's so dry it's very hard moving around quietly even sitting still. Was sitting there wondering if I could get away with subsonic .22WMR out of a tree stand as it's a little too close to the road for my liking, and there's horses nearby that I don't want to spook (gotta keep the neighbours happy!).

Spent a bit of time doing some e-scouting in both new areas and areas I've been close to but not visited yet. Have a few plans for the coming winter so working towards ticking a few of them off if I can.

ripped the thermal off my 308 and whacked it on my Howa 6mm ARC.

Haven't had this rifle out for over 2 yrs so I'm keen to see how it performs on some hogs, loaded up some 103gr ELD-X's as well. :drinks:

A mate put a new set of tyres on his car last week. I took a ute load of firewood up to him yesterday and helped him replace the rear struts and springs. We took it for a test drive afterwards and it was mint. He rang this arvo saying he'd broken down in Moe. So I went up there and it sounds to me like it's done a rod bearing (hell of a racket), so now he's looking for another engine for the thing (2010 Subaru wagon). He'd gone up to his mum's to prune a big blackwood hanging over the neighbour's fence, so I towed him around to her place (only 3km) and we cut the tree down. Then we loaded the bigger stuff in the van and brought it home for firewood. If the engine had gone two weeks ago he might not have bothered doing tyres and suspension, but it's a decent car so it's worth getting an engine if we can find one. He was given it with a blown engine years ago as a parts car for his other Subaru but it was so good he had an engine put in and it became his primary drive.

Happy birthday bugman.

Sun fish is grouse. Did you grab a couple of fillets to try?

Yesterday fitted my new 3-9×40 leupold to 30.06.
Sighted it in at lunch time.
Out camping now. No sightings yet. :unknown:

I know those cars well, spent a lot of time with them when new. Overall pretty solid cars with good ground clearance and all wheel drive. However the 3.6L six had some oil consumption issues and the 2.5 motors were ok but the CVT transmissions don't last. They are a "sealed" unit and typically go bang by 120k miles. If one can work around those issues, again they are pretty solid machines and safe as well with the multi ring cage supporting the roof.

Spring has sprung here, everything is rapidly turning green, grass is growing, wind and rain has stopped. I'm ready to get outside and start doing stuff and get cleaned up from winter.

I'll pass this onto him. I know nothing about them other than from when I replaced a head gasket on my brother-in-law's Leone over twenty years ago. That one impressed with it's towing ability and grunt but was horrendous on fuel. This 2010 looks like the same basic engine but with more junk packed in around it, doesn't look like it'd be much fun doing a head on this one, the Leone was pretty easy to get to.

I did notice the heavy crash cage around the car when we were doing the struts, about two-inch tube all the way around it. His second Subaru is a '92 sedan which I personally think is the much nicer vehicle of the two, it's a manual for a start, but it has some sort of gadget in the transfer case that automatically alters the ratio of engine power going to front and rear axles apparently?

The old 2.5 motors in the mid 2000s ate head gaskets, by 2010 as I recall it's still the same engine just evolved and upgraded. The big issue in 2010 was the early CVT transmissions, they went bang enough Subaru of America was replacing them free out of warranty up to 120k miles. The 3.6L six with a regular auto transmission has a lot more horsepower and torque.

As I recall at the time with the reinforced cage on the Outback, it could take 4 to 5 times the weight of the car on the roof before it started to give way. The other Subarus have the same set up. I got to test out this gear for real about 5 years ago at work when I was sent into a 45 degree angle hill in a Subaru Forester and got airborne, barrel rolled sideways and then fell to earth and rolled multiple times. The roof held and the car once rolled over, fired up and was still driveable. I was sore for about 2 weeks and got a bruise but other than that, good. If I had been in some general motors car or something, things probably would not have turned out so well.

Subarus are strong cars, they have their foibles but overall strong cars they are.

By 2010, the only Subaru with the ability to manual alter power going from front to back was the Subaru STI. They let electronics figure all that out these days.
