Went to the range yesterday. Tested some squib loads for the 223 using cast bullets I was given. (Abt 400 I think)

Also fair bit of practice with the 22lr.

Yea, buying perishable food. The world is full of idiots.

Mate, once the Hwy is clear again I'll post up a few rolls of bog paper if you like. Still plenty here.

Be careful what you say.

I'll send the Mrs up on her broom. :D

Was toying with buying a machete a few months ago. They are cheap and i missplaced mine years ago. I have occasional use for one. But have been getting away with using an old carving knife.
But will give it a miss now.

Only misty rain here, not even measurable in the gauge. But decided to hit the lathe, turned up a 1/2×28 thread protector for a 16" Kidd carbon barrel I have for a 10/22. It had this dicky compensator on it that annoys the cr*p out of me, and because it's such a large diameter, the thread protector needs to match. And I put a real fine diamond knurling on it. Now to hang it in the blackening solution.
For those of you that are handy, go to the wreckers and get a few axles that are cheap (or free cos they have busted splines). 1040, 1050 is used for proper Aussie-made trailer axles usually, and 1055 or 1541 steel for car axles. Doesn't matter. Makes great cheap but super strong steel for this kind of stuff.

Mate,,, my question is, why the hell would anyone even bother to put a compensator on a 10/22 ?

I've heard of people whinging about recoil from a 223,,,,,,,, but a compensator on a .22 ,,,,,,,,,,

I run various brakes on my rimfire rifles that have threaded muzzles, just to protect the muzzle. I don't believe they have any effect all on performance.

Barrel comes with it, nothing I could do about it. So I removed it, hence making a custom diameter thread protector.

I thought they were gay too until I understand what they do.

Ok so, if you lot ever get a chance to dispell that myth and try a blow-forward Volquartson comp, have a go. But unfortunately for most it's got to be on a 10/22 style rifle, either one of theirs or their (for a) Ruger target barrel, fitted to a 10/22.
If you rattle off 10 shots as quick as you can, you will be amazed at how the blow-forward comp counters the bolt inertia and the thing just sits on target.
It isn't about taming the jet blast from a 338 Lapua, it's about physics and because they can.

This particular rimfire is the most accurate 22LR to shoot PowerPoint's, Minimags and Velocitors I've ever seen. I dont shoot target ammo because its useless to me. Hopefully removing the comp won't change that.
Its just been a rainy day job .

Good comps work amazingly on centrefires as people who use them know, but even a 22LR has a squirt of gas at 24,000 psi that can be redirected. Especially the ones we have, they are superlight and it's absolutely noticeable. Newton's law isn't bullsh*t, try one and see.
The one on my wife's 22mag Volquartson Superlight semiauto is amazing. Shooting it, then shooting a 22 Mag Ruger American we have is like chalk and cheese.

But if I saw one on a CZ 457, I'd probably laugh my nuts off too, because that's not what they were designed to do.

People who've tried these rifles are amazed. Those who don't believe, who cares?

Re: What did you do today?

Post by jezzab » 10 Mar 2025, 8:26 pm

8am I had a knock at the door and noticed 2 cows in my yard, seems old mate popped into the neighbours to drop something off, opened the gate and they ran out (so he says). 30 mins later he gave up getting them back in and came over for help

Last night I headed out to my uncle farm not to far away to try and sort out their rabbit problem (they have been digging under the house and around). Did some swapping around of scopes for the night, threw the multispectral/thermal on the 22LR and the thermal on the .25 PCP (44gr HP slugs @ 1050fps).

All set we headed out with thermal binos each (my cousin and I) and saw 3 rabbits before it started raining which was a shame, but the rain was needed but not enough. I got one (first two we saw in the ute just scouting) just walking down the driveway with the PCP. Still, I love to see all the things around living their life on the 1000 acres (sheep, roos, cows, rabbits, foxes, possoms, the list goes on) at night.

We did see a cub fox but I couldnt shoot it (its not lambing season and there isnt a risk at the moment, they dont have chooks, the sheep are full grown etc and I live 20 mins down the road, ill be back before then). Just seeing it 20m from us in the dark pouncing on crickets and insects to eat, onlivious to us... but like I said, coming close to lambing season, different story, it can enjoy life for a couple of months. Im sure im going to cop flack for that but hey, whatever. Different story at my place, I have chooks and I shoot them regularly as ive lost a few. And hares as they try and ring bark my fruit trees in the orchard

Last week I smoked a couple of rabbits and hares, they came up alright (first time).
My salami is coming along well in the dry ager (12oC @ 80% humidity. Who needs winter anymore)

And today I hand loaded some stuff after I learnt a heap from guys on here

Week before I helped muster some cows down the road for sale. The electric dirtbike did just as good as the gas bikes.

The Eastern Browns have been bad at the moment, coming up to the house vs staying down near the the creek and eating frogs, most likely because the mice are back up near the house and the seasonal creek is drying up . Lots of Tiger snakes around too but they seems to avoid my joint and harass the neighbours more.

The panic buying stuff is always funny as a lot of people don't have any future planning or thought process on having supplies on hand at all.

I always have a basic set of things on hand and when I use say 3 of something, I buy another 3 to replace it. I've always got bottled water, paper products, plenty of food, cash, ammo, etc on hand.

We are getting the first signs of spring around here. Temps this week above 10C and some sun. All the remaining snow and ice is melting. This week I should be getting out to make some videos for Youtube. I don't remember doing any shooting this winter at my range at all but also the weather was poor at times.

Accuweather says the Polar Vortex will be back later this month with cold and snow but in the mean time I will be enjoying the warm weather this week.

I extended a 12 foot mesh farm gate to 1800 high, probably the 25th one I've done. Stapled up one of my dogs who bailed up a very big 16 point Red stag in the house yard, and was rolled and spiked. Then went out to feed my Elk and got rolled myself at a gate by "Junior", another 5 y.o. 14 pointer Red stag. Didn't spike me but it f***en hurt. He almost got a 124gn 9mm HP in him for that. Another one of my strange days.

But I've just realised 4 trips and 4 deer. 1 nice fallow buck and then 3 sambar. Or is that 2 and a half?

180 gr out of a 30.06. Off hand shot side on at about 35 yards, totally smashed the off side shoulder. Ran about 75 yards and still had to finish her. Unbelievable.

I turned down, threaded and fitted a muzzle brake to a mates sons Alkor 223 lever release. They don't come threaded like the Chimera, and I think he was having an inferiority complex over it.
What I or anyone else thinks about this, he's enjoying himself.

My car fridge is great. But has annoyed me that coldest is at the bottom and if I put meat on the bottom other food, beer etc on top meat gets crushed.

Sooo, I made a simple removable alluminium shelf. Abt 50mm from the bottom. Should do the trick.

Ripped a leaky radiator out of the old Honda and replaced it with a thicker one from a CRV, every thing bolted back on perfectly, 25 year old spark plugs were next to go and some fresh 5w30.

Attended the Arms Fair at Beenleigh. Good turnout of vendors there and lots of people making it worth their while.
Picked up some cheap 30-30 dies, a bargain hand priming tool and a fairbairn.
Am shooting black powder at the club tomorrow.
The mowing can wait till next week.
Life is good.

Worked the morning then setup a desktop metal lathe and worked out how to use it.
Debunged, taste tested and cryovaced a bunch of salami I made.
Installed a Pulse carbon wrapped prefit bull barrel on my CZ 457 plus a very quick sight in.
Couple of relos popped over for a beer and salami tasting (cutting short the sighting in)
Dozed off on the couch watching a movie and now I'm wide awake

Recovered from yesterdays 303 shoot at VRA Castlemaine, 300m Snap then 300m Rapid followed by 500m Deliberate using a mates Lithgow No6, great little carbine. Alas by the end I was in so much pain I couldn't clear the line and had to be physically assisted off the mound while the Mrs cleared the rifle and gear. My days of prone shooting are over.
