Getting back to bedding my M70, 23/9, 7:38 pm, page 43
Bedding the floorplate was done on a very warm day but forecasts were for much cooler weather, so a small, experimental batch was mixed yesterday and this morning it was rock-hard, so the weather here is not an issue and bedding of the action will be undertaken, because there is what we used to call "rock" or barrel movement at the fore-end tip, when the front take-down screw is wound in and out.

Up at 4am this morning, first crack at some Goose shooting, a heap of fun with the Greeks. Bit of cook up afterwards only added to the day.

Off to the range later to test some 30 06 load

Bedding the M70
We went to lunch today which is another story ;) but at home this pm I took a look at the action bedding, starting with the tang. The compound at the rear of the bed-proper looked as though it was almost too close to the action. My method is to relieve around the bed to eliminate any chance of contact and I thought I would remove a bit more. To my surprise, the stuff yielded to the wood gouge very easily, considering that yesterday's experimental batch was Rrrrock-hard!

That made the bed suspect in my view and holding the gouge to the bed, I gave it a smack with the plastic hammer. To my horror, a piece of bedding flew away instantly,  leaving a bare patch of timber to which it was supposed to be sticking

Back to the drawing board. :(

For lunch today at The Golf Club, I chose the Peking Duck Spring Rolls, which sounded very grand indeed to my humble self. To my surprise, it came with a dipping S A U C E. Well, Dear Friends, I am here to tell you that they could have stuffed those Rolls with Horsehair and that  sauce  would still have disguised the taste.

Nice haul. ESP on fly. And on home made flies to. Remind Ed me of the time I used to take boars in north Qld from home made arrows I cut squares on a table saw from beech left over from work. Then I hand planed th corners off them Then I cheated with sandpaper and a cordless drill Varnished or shellac And then black stumps or ribtecks. Today I visited my fathers farm in northern nsw. Put a round through my 4570 and then made it home to Qld in one piece. No traffic jam. Thank you lord.

Well I had a lot of fun this weekend, did my annual machine gun shoot. Shot a MP5K, MP5SD, Ruger AC556(The A Team gun), Steyr AUG, Mini Draco AK, integrally suppressed AR15, 300 Blackout AR15, Polish PM63, WW2 Thompson and a 100 round belt through a M240. Eventually I will post all the videos to the Youtube channel.

After that drove a few miles over to this big Cabelas and well, huge amounts of gunpowder, bullets, brass and primers of all kinds. Never seen Cabelas offer so many 8 pound jugs of powder of all types. So supplies are back. I picked up some Starline brass, bullets and a case gauge. Absolutely no shortage of anything, shelves were heaving with tons of ammo and components.

Then off to eat at Texas Roadhouse for steak, chicken and buttered rolls.

Leaves are turning so saw a bunch of brilliant reds, oranges and yellows on the trees driving home. Always a nice drive this time of the year.

The weather here is weird with El Nino. Not great fall foliage this year, too wet, too warm, lots of trees are still green or empty of leaves, they turn quickly and drop.

I am working on "Project Big Booty Part 2" for Youtube, a 300 Blackout subsonic reloading project. I put out part 1 in the spring months ago but tons of other projects and summer delayed it. I am working on a load for 220g Berry's plated bullets and CFE BLK powder. Have the Part 2 video half filmed and will film the range part when the weather clears tomorrow or Tuesday. I have already done an off camera test and function is good but we are supersonic, so will have to work down the load. The 220g Berry's are affordable bullets so I think this will be a good load for folks. It hits hard on steel.

Also loading some 9mm and doing another video for a large frame Glock 45 ACP build with aftermarket parts and a Holosun 407 green dot. Once I complete that will be doing a review on a Palmetto State AR kit and also a Burris 1-6x tactical scope.

Yes CFE BLK is a smokeless powder that Hodgdon made for 300 Blackout. It is "optimized" for 300 Blackout subsonic and you can use it in 7.62x39, 6.8 SPC, 221 Fireball and similar cartridges.

I have tried it before in 300 Blackout for supersonic and it takes about 2 grains more than a magnum pistol powder like Lil Gun or H110 to get similar results.

I've mostly ignored 300 Blackout subsonic with heavy bullets but I see some possibilities for short range shooting. It hits pretty hard on steel at 100 meters. With a suppressor at some point, it will make them very quiet. These Berry's Bullets in 220g were made for loading in 300 Black and they are an affordable bullet.

Re: What did you do today?

Post by Flyonline » 06 Nov 2023, 9:02 am

Saturday I went for a fish with 'the unk' aka my usual fishing partner aka my uncle and we hit a decent creek some ways away that takes a bit of getting to, a decent drive and through a couple of private properties. On the walk in we saw a fox out in the middle of the sunny warm day at 10:30 which was a little unusual. After hitting the creek we found the water to be crystal clear, almost too clear but it was to pay off in the end. It took a while for us to find fish, these 'bows don't seem to like the tail of the pool and are usually in the deeper water or bubble stream, unlike browns which will happily sit in the tail of the pool or undercut shallow banks. There isn't a lot of tree cover, and with a couple of cormorants flying around we weren't sure if the over bright weather or birds had kept the fish hunkered down. There were a few pools we were able to spot fish in both before and after fishing it (got a few follows/hits that didn't hook up), but we weren't seeing a whole lot. Shortly after lunch we came across a nice deep dark pool with a log half way up that crossed it completely making casting a little difficult. Just as we approached the tail end, there was a small rise on the downstream side of the log, so I put in a couple of good casts before hooking up on a 30cm odd fish that jumped and pulled like heck before I managed to drag it into the tail of the pool and subdue it to release. Approaching the log, I cautiously poked my head over the other side and could see a usual creek size fish finning in the clear water. I fired in a couple of casts that weren't the best I'd ever done when I saw movement in the deeper side in the shadows and eventually picked out a BIG fish. Another couple of difficult casts brought no response other than it slowly moved off upstream. Bugger!! Still, I flicked in another cast towards the head of the pool where the water bubbled in from above and slowly stripped the fly towards me. Suddenly out of the clear water a huge set of shoulders and head appeared - a couple of quick strips and it pounced on the fly only a couple of rod lengths away, the clear water giving me an awesome unobstructed view. All hell broke loose as it felt the prick of the #12 hook and it took off downstream under the log and only a bit of desperate rodwork and footwork as I climbed over the rootball of the fallen tree kept it clear and running free and it powered up and downstream a few times with the 2wt glass rod working over time to keep it in some semblance of control. There were a few rocks, roots and blackberries in the the pool so I had to be careful not to let it get too close as well as not overwork the tippet too much. Eventually after 5min or so the unk' managed to slide the net under it and it was caught!!!!!!

That's 52cm of prime 'bow hen and possibly a once or twice a lifetime catch in this area! After a couple of photos I slid the big fish back into the water and watched it swim off into the shadows :friends:

We moved on, buoyed by that capture and that we were starting to see fish again. Not long after, unk (who I'd given and would give the bulk of the fishing now) was good enough to put in a great cast into a tight spot and extract a decent 30cm fish from a tight corner on a little pocket off one side of the main flow. Pool hopping towards some better water, we put up a sambar hind from a blackberry thicket and watched it crash into and get tangled up in the farm fence on the steep hillside above us. Soon after we came to a deep but small pocket of water with a log poking down into the depths where the water cascaded down from the ledge above. Firing a little yabby fly into the shallower water along the side, I let it sink a few seconds before a couple of strips and I was on! I small acrobatic fish was skulldragged down into the riffle below and I flipped it off. Throwing in another cast into slightly deeper water the exact same thing happened - another small fish was pulled down into the run below, but this time managed to throw the hook itself (all good, we deliberately give them slack to try and let it happen). Hmmm, 3 from 3? Not this time, but the 4th cast hard up against the log and a better fish decided it liked my yabby and snaffled it and a 30cm fish leapt and strutted its stuff before I was able to get it to hand and slide it downstream. A 4th followed a cast or two later - this was getting ridiculous! Turning to unk' (whose fished this creek a heck of lot more than me) I asked him what his best number of fish from one pool was and he replied with a laugh '2'. The last cast was into the deepest part of the pool on the far side of the log and the running water bowed the line out as the fly sank. A strip or two to take up the slack and everything went tight the moment the fly moved and a decent (high 30's/40cm) 'bow leapt and crashed around before suddenly everything went limp - pulled fly? Nope, the wear and tear of 5 sets of teeth had broken the tippet - bugger! Still, 5 fish in about 7 casts in a pool of water smaller than most kitchens was something to remember and we agreed about as much fun you could have with clothes on :allegedly:

That was really it for the day, though we fished on for another hour or so. Unk' managed to land one and I missed 2 including something that felt fairly decent. Returning to the car for a celebratory beer we agreed that it was both a disappointment in fish numbers seen, and a reward to see a fish that big. But we also agreed, that if we knew everything about catching fish it wouldn't be as fun :unknown:

That yabby fly was an experiment I'd tied up and never got round to using before, so I quickly sat down at the vice and tied up a few variants to give to unk' and replenish my fly box for the next trip out as almost every fish (trout or redfin) we've ever caught have yabbies in them so they obviously feature high on the menu.

You joining the Roman Army Pete

Today I went and pulled my trail cam in the hope of finding a stack of fallow walking past. Unfortunately I'd put it too close to some bracken and grass that kept blowing in the wind so the card was full long before I got there, but there was a last 2 pics of fallow does and a sambar hind, spike and small stag. Was interested to see that only the stag passed in the night, the others were all full daylight.

I'd ordered a new stone last week and it arrived today, a Shapton Pro 1000grit splash and go ceramic stone. Grabbed the little kitchen knife (Global SS jobby) and 10 passes on either side and a quick strop on my pants had it shaving sharp. Would normally take me a bit of work with the jig etc. so pretty pleased so far. Unfortunately it almost looks like it is cracked about 3/4 of the way around so I might have to take some photos and see what the g-o is, not entirely happy @ ~$60.
