Surgery this morning to repair a hernia I've had for 35 years, never given me any trouble other than feeling like I've been kicked in the
nads :-) On the way home now.

I suspect I'll have plenty of time for shooting over the next few weeks :-)

Long walk this avo. Up and down dale. Missed the fox. Bugger I think that's 3 now. Just too quick for me with the 223. Next time on that farm, it's the 12g.

So, surgery on Tuesday went fine, did some walking and shopping, minor pain but all good. Not allowed to lift more than 3kg for eight weeks, so I had an early night and slept about eleven hours. Up every two hours though for a wee and a glass of water as I was desperate not to get constipated and risk popping some stitches :-)
Wednesday was going well, until about 1630 when a cow went into labour. Toughest birth we've had so far, had to pull it out with chains and a crowbar, but by 1800 the big bastard was out and both were doing fine, though his mum was pretty torn up. Pretty confident I managed to avoid damaging the surgery as I kept to using my left arm and leg for the pulling. Tummy muscles were certainly more painful, but not unexpected. Still too sore to be walking out shooting, perhaps tomorrow.

Today I discovered that laetiporus portentosus, aka tinderpunk fungus, not only makes a great coal extender in its solid form, but when its bug eaten it'll take a spark readily from flint and steel, negating the need for charcloth. Pretty chuffed about that

I found that my new kitchen knife had, not only a slight warp, but that I had inadvertently "overcooked" part of the edge and tip.

Consequently, I reground it to remove the burned areas and am now contemplating the embuggerance of doing a second round of normalising and heat treating a blade that should be ready for sharpening

Got out for a walk with the 223 late yesterday. It's been a while. A normally dry creek was flowing pretty hard and stuffed up the hunt.

Anyway i was walking back to the car when I spotted this. A few might be interested.

Oldbloke,
That makes me wonder if some Aborigines made those little wells, before Cook, as a water supply after rain.

I think they used them as mortar and pestle for grinding plants.

Correct blade. There are others nearby.

It's on a rise with a good view above a river.

I'll add they are the result of generations grinding various grass seeds at the same spot.

In fact william buckley a famous escaped convict may have visited this location.

We had a big tree come down on the fence late this afternoon. We have our cows in the paddock and the neighbour's cows are next door. So I went down and cleared it away from the fence so I could re-string the wires to stop them crossing tonight and causing a headache tomorrow. No cows in sight when I got there at 1830.

Within ten minutes the neighbour's cows were trying to get into the tree to see what I was up to in there :-)

I got it all cut away from the fence and was able to re-string the wires good enough to keep them separated tonight, I hope.
Was pretty wet out there and I was a bit hampered by the surgeon's orders not to lift more than 3kg, some of the branches and logs were over 2kg I reckon.

Well, I finally picked up my ute today. It was stolen in Sth QLD on 17th of June.
Four months for what are IMO minor repairs. Basically due to a combination of waiting for parts and utter incompetence by the insurance Co and the two repairers involved.

Looks like you all have spring getting going in Australia.

We are past peak on the leaves here. Lots of beautiful foliage this year, brilliant reds, oranges, yellows. We still have a few trees turning and the aspens this time of year turn gold, so they are typically the last trees to pop.

I am racing to get a bunch of projects done before the cold settles in.

Woke up at 5am to drive to St Marie's with the missus to pick up some Aylesbury ducks, wet and wintery weather down here today so not working.
Then spent a bit of time searching for jobs on the internet......as much as I like my bosses they're just piling way too much stuff onto me,way more than we agreed to at the beginning, and they're ignoring my recommendations based on 26 years of experience, so its time to start looking elsewhere again.

That's unfortunate about the Job BP
Is it worth asking them to bring you in on call for certain jobs you like doing for them and chasing a few hours here and there to fill the gaps?

I've been bouncing around between several employers over the last 2 years, business are so desperate for people that they're willing to keep you on the books while you jump back and forth between jobs helping out when it's needed for seasonal work and busy days.
It's a little unconventional but it's working well for both them and myself.
It's also giving me time and money to further developing my side hustles.

Hmmm it might be,but tbh this re entry into vineyards has pretty well convinced me I'm over them. I've half thought about buying a slasher and a little herbicide unit and a tractor and going out on my own....I just don't have the monetary backup to do so.
Also been considering selling the house, taking a year off to get my health and s**t sorted, and f***ing off somewhere else entirely.
