I was very impressed, did some accuracy testing for a Palmetto State AR kit on this Youtube video I am working on. I bought this kit on sale for $300, included everything but the lower receiver, which was another $50. When you finish building it you have what amounts to a "mil spec" AR-15.

I tried 4 different types of .223/5.56 ammo. 55g Remington .223, 62g PMC, 75g Hornady bullet "Frontier" ammo and 77g Israeli "Razorcore". Most of the ammo grouped at under 2 inches at 100 yards but the Frontier ammo was impressive, .71 inches with 3 shots and I think the other group was .9 inches or so. The Frontier ammo uses a 75g Hornady boat tail hollow point bullet loaded in "Lake City" military brass at a reasonable price. Excellent ammo.

Overall impressive value for the money for a rifle.

Had a nice surprise when I dumped the photos off the game cam, a mature stag in broad daylight. This is the second mature stag I've seen in this gully, just gotta meet up with either of them now. They're no giants, but would do me

X marks the spot!!!

Snagged an extra day off today to make a 5 day w/e, so headed out after the family was awake to drop off the game cam and/or try and run a subsonic through a goat for 'testing' purposes. Did a quick loop around and dropped the camera off at the top of my local gully where the goats appear to be trafficking through the most.

Tossing up with plans and decided to do a quick blat along the top of the ridgeline in the car to do a bit of road scouting then head off to check out a couple of forest dams to see if the pigs/deer have started moving into them yet. About 1min after turning onto the ridge road, I found the goats crossing the road  There were quite a few, so I quickly parked up and chased after them. Dropped down the face and contoured across before getting onto them again. Shot a young billy at about 60m with the a 190g SubX which performed ok.....while the shooter was a little lacking. Had to give it a follow up shot to finish it off quickly, though it wasn't walking off the subx as a flesh wound and would have gone down eventually. Was somewhat back but blew a big hole out the side of the ribcage. I thought I was ok as there was a heap of fresh bright red blood, but not to be.

Followed up the mob after a quick autopsy and managed to sneak into about 50-60m in the chip dry leaves and calm conditions. Ended up sitting watching them for about 2hrs, dueling with the self appointed 'karen' goat who kept glaring me down and sniffing the alarm. After a while the others started to ignore her, and I spent some time glassing the mob in the hope of finding a big billy. Did find one of a decent size, but he seemed quite young so after tossing up, I elected to back out and leave them to it. Was seriously tempted to knock over one or both of the poll billies though.

Enjoying the use of the vanguard shooting sticks, should have got some ages ago

TBH it wasn't a forethought, I was mooching around while in the shop as they were trying to match a set of rings and saw a few dusty sierra boxes on the shelf and remembered you were after somethingorother. Photos are always good to reference back against

Did a bit of gardening, following instructions from the leader of the opposition. Started at a great and productive pace, but as soon as she drove out to have lunch with her girlfriends, I downed tools. I will worry about the repercussions later, when she gets home.
I will just explain that I broke my trowel.

Yesterday, I watered one of my echidnas...
43 degrees, and apparently, none of the 5 other soaking options in the yard would cut the mustard...

Carved these water bowls about 20 years back, in an effort to keep the frogs out of the inside loo.
Didnt really work, but the local bird-life enjoy them for hot-weather water-sports.
And I had no idea they'd be appealing to a large echidna..

We finally figured out a couple of days back, why the dogs 15L water bucket keeps moving out from under the tap at night...
We'd been blaming the dog, but couldnt figure out how he was doing it without tipping the bucket over.
Turned out to be a prickly bulldozer that gets in underneath it, and pushes...

There is a large soggy patch other side of the house yard where a water pipe has been leaking for a month, but Mr Prickles apparently wants to feel cold hard stone beneath his feet...

The coiled wire thing is a copper-wire goanna my sister made for me, but every time I perch it atop the rocks around the water bowls, the Apostlebirds keep swinging off it until it falls over again.

G'day,

We spent much of yesterday afternoon trying to get a calf out of a mature angus cow. The calf had developed with his head bent rearwards over his back. No matter what was tried two vets simply couldn't get far enough in to manipulate the head forward and down between its forelegs or cut its head off. So she'll go to the knackers as soon as possible. I fear the vet bill will be high. Then there is the loss of a cow and the potential value of the calf.

Such are the joys of farming.

One of ours last month was stuck backwards and the vet couldn't get it out for hours. When it eventually dropped it had died sometime during the battle. Public holiday so $600 vet bill for a dead calf. Luckily we picked up a beautiful poddy for $35 and the mother has really taken to her, after a few days of struggling to get them to bond. One more was good for the first week then came down crook for no reason. Very lethargic and for a few days we expected to find her dead each morning but she's hanging on. Two days ago she was walking around and feeding from mum on her own. We thought she was through it so we stopped the tube feeding but last night she went down again. We gave her a tube feed late last night and she did take some from mum but was very poorly. She had a feed herself this morning though and Rose has just gone up to give her some electrolite with the tube. All the others are strong, healthy and happily bouncing around the paddocks. We did pull five or six but most dropped just fine on their own, and only a couple of them were difficult, one was a monster but the crowbar and chains got her out okay. We don't like to leave them to struggle and exhaust themselves so if it's not coming easy we give them a hand.

G'day BR,

You're having a worse run with calving than we are. All the calves up to yesterday popped out without any problems. We have one more cow to calve and that's it. I shouldn't complain about yesterday as in 38 years we have only had 5 calves get stuck and one of those, with a big boof head, got pulled out by a vet. The other cows and calves didn't survive. The only problem I'm having is that the little buggers are either getting stronger or my age is catching up to me. I usually mark and ear tag calves at 24 hours when they are dry and they have got attached to their mothers. New calves might look cute, but they can put up a real fight to escape as you will know. My wife can't help me as she got bucked off her horse two weeks ago and is bent, battered and bruised all over. She's realising that a 70+ year old body doesn't bounce back quickly.

G'day bigpete,

Does your father recognise you? Before she died I visited my mother in a care unit a number of times. For a while she recognised me, but the last time she told me she had a son and I wasn't him. She became agitated so I left. I told staff I would stop visiting as it was unfair to them for me to get her all wound up and confused.

Our last one came on Tuesday night at 2300. Dropped with no involvement from us but was dumb as a brick so it took an hour to get it onto the teat before we could come home. I think we just go hands-on sooner than most people would. We hate leaving it until the mother is totally exhausted so we go in early and help. We've left them too long in the past and once it drops the mother is too exhausted to stand there to feed it. Luckily, we haven't lost any of the mothers yet, although when the vet was trying to get that dead one out I was seriously considering getting a rifle and just putting mum in the freezer. It was pretty horrible, but she pulled through just fine and now adores her little adopted girl. The big one we pulled last month was tough but we've had some really tough pulls that were far worse. Agreed about lacking the stamina to fight with the little buggers :-) But for pulling them I jam a six-foot crowbar into the ground and we wrap the chain around it about 400mm above the ground, gives me great leverage and prevents the mum from deciding to wander off. One of the guys at the pistol club prefers a simple short bar that he puts through the chain, I'd rather have the force multiplier of leverage. Another guy said his dad used to put them in the crush and hook baby up to a boat winch, which sounds like a great way to rip a calf to pieces, not for me, I like to keep a good feel of what's happening. Rose usually tags them and fixes the boys within hours of dropping, but we ran out of tags so still have a few to do. Plan is to do them tomorrow, then we're moving them down the road to the middle block in the arvo.

Bugger about the missus but it seems to me that's what horses do best. Hope she recovers soon and well.

G'day BR,

The vets had a block and tackle attached to the forelegs of the calf and attached to a post in the yards. The cow was in the head bail. The problem was that we could get the legs out a fair way, but the head would then jam inside the cow and could not be manipulated.
