After several days of abortive attempts at getting 30yo computers running, I discovered how to solve one issue, gotta love google, then planted some oak seedlings I've grown from acorns collected 3yrs ago.
They spent several months sleeping in the fridge then then 2yrs growing in my sunroom, now graduated to the outside.

Took some rifles out for some shooting.

Mainly wanted to see if I can shoot okay with aperture sights, so I took the SMLE with the PH5 sight, No4Mk1*, M1903-A3, and the Uberti 66 .38 Special, and since I grabbed the Uberti anyway I grabbed the Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag as well, and the Carcano TS Short Rifle just because it caught my eye and is so much fun to shoot. And the Ruger American Predator .223 to check zero with a low-velocity load as there are too many foxes around just now.
Started with the Uberti 66, which was the only one I managed to get through before the sky opened.

Got a few rounds through the Marlin before the rain hammered down, then the M1903-A3, the Carcano, then the No4 and SMLE. The aperture sights let me shoot so much better than open sights, and the M1903-A3 groups far better than either of the Lee's. I spent more time on the Lee's so by the time I finished they had water running out of them. Fine apertures are not great in the rain.
Then I confirmed the .223 was zeroed at 50m with a 1750fps load.
Although my phone was recording everything, when I tried to view them or upload them to my computer the photo and video files are all corrupt from when the rain started, so all I got is the Uberti shooting - bugger.
All up it was a fun couple of hours despite the pouring rain, despite having to clean and oil all of them just now.

Tried to sleep most of the day, tried to flint knap, tried to carve an axe handle, just too knackered for any of it.
Then my boss dropped off a birthday present for me....guess we're having surf and turf Friday!

Great day.

I had a long appointment at the Brain Injury Unit to meet my new physical therapist and discuss a new drug free therapy that might help with my intention tremors and possibly be able to ditch the Parkinson meds.

She made no promises, but with luck I might be able to shoot off-hand again

I managed to get out today for an offhand 180m practice with the SMLE.

Went okay but still trying to get to grips with the aperture thing, the goggles were fogging up today so I think drilling a hole through them is the next step forward.
The group is still large but I think it is significantly better than my prone groups were from last Saturday (unaided and with the EyePro on safety glasses). Walking up the hill and back to check the target after each string certainly adds to the challenge, the target is 20m higher than my shooting position. My sixth shot hit the frame and killed the target - again.

I wondered whether the black/orange might be an issue so made a black diamond to try. Near the end the tape was shrinking as it heated up and pulled the upper left sheet of paper off so it was folded over - it's possible the two missing shots hit the MDF up there (the back board is full of holes so I wouldn't know), but it's just as likely I threw them off the right edge.

I figure if I just concentrate on tightening the offhand groups the kneeling and prone will be just fine.
And I shot the target frame twice today - again.

I finished off with some relaxing gong plinking with the Ruger Precision out to about 190m, I didn't bother lasing them.

Yesterday a mate tried to teach me to shear a sheep, if he decides not to do any more over the weekend I should be able to get more practice in :-)

Slept in my own bed last night

Post by Wm.Traynor » 12 Nov 2022, 10:21 am

Got home from home from hospital yesterday, after going to emergency with a badly swollen right foot and calf. Blow me down if I didn't test +ve for you know what. Got it on 28/10 at a family wedding where no one was masked. After three years of being careful, masking up did not enter my mind.
How's That?!  :x

In New Zealand the sheep graziers don't like to shear their sheep ... they tell you "she's mine, go get your own!"

Met a mate at the local range today. Been yonks.

Had to check sights on two 30.06s. All good there just a minor adjustment for one.

Checked my Marlin 223. All good. Just a tad high.

Then as I bought a heap of cheap 55gr bullets for the 223 a couple of years ago (and the old stuff is getting low) tested some new loads.

This was the best result.

Apparently there's over 500 wires down and we could expect the power outage to last until Tuesday

We had some pretty serious flooding in the towns which I'm sure will show up on the news at some point, but all in all wasn't too bad. My biggest regret was not going out and getting some footage of the weather, the missus is absolutely terrified of thunderstorms so I felt obliged to stay home

Definitely some impressive lightning, almost like the tropics.

Did you loose power at your place?
We had a planned power outage on Saturday morning that lasted about 6 hours, the power came on for ½ an hour then it was out again so this arvo I've joined the generator brigade and fired mine up to chill the fridge.

No we didn't but the other half of Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island did. We ourselves got out of it pretty easy
