Emptied an entire powder flask through the .50 cal
Cleaned it
Decided I didn't like the modern varnish finish on it's stock.
Stripped the varnish, sanded the wood and oiled it.

Started making a file knife for my missus's birthday today, shes requested an Osage handle and copper penny guard and pommel.
Also checked my 35 whelen loads, they both shoot quite well at 70m,only the 200gn sierra pro hunters hit about 5" higher than the 225 SGK loads. Overall I'm happy enough with the results and will be using the SGK rounds to hunt with....as soon as my knee comes good....

Up at dawn, catch another hour nap now off to the range for ANZAC service and shoot to raise money for Legacy. Shall use an Ishapore today in memory of the 15000 indians who served alongside us at Gallipoli.

I have been meaning to work out why the trigger on my .222 Ruger has got so heavy.I googled cleaning the bolt and it strips out easy and once I washed all the old lithium grease out and lightly oiled it is back to being light and smooth as before.Took nearly 10 mins

Spring time is gradually making it's way here. It froze last night but temps during the day are gradually easing up around 15C and some buds are appearing on the trees. The trees should leaf out in the next week or two. It's funny you go from plowing snow and not much time until you are mowing grass.

I got all my steel targets on the range refreshed with Rust Oleum paint and got them all set up for the year and had a fire yesterday at the range in the fire pit and made some burgers. Also put out another 300 Blackout video and a review on the RCBS priming tool.

Yesterday, Rose and I took her brother (due to his electrical skills) out into the bush to repair an electric deer fence. Drizzle and very cold wind made it less than pleasant but we replaced all the rat-chewed wiring and sheathed everything in flexible conduit. We got the electric side of it working fine again, only to discover that the entire 300m fence is earthed and doesn't work - bugger!

The Landcare group needs to get seedlings in very soon, so we'll have to go in again this week to fix the earthing issue. They've used plastic 1800mm-long stringers for the fencing wires to keep them separated and isolated from earth. These don't go into the ground, they just hold the wires in alignment. Every fourth stringer they've driven in a star picket to support the stringer. Every fifty meters or so they've put in a very solid 60mm round galv post to support the fence against the wind that howls across the ridge. The stringer is supposed to stay against the picket but they haven't attached it in any way. When the animals (deer, roos and wild sheep) knock the fence around, the stringers move an inch and then the hot wires lay against the pickets and poles, earthing them out. The stringers are held in place on the wire with spring wire clips about 200mm long. One of these clips jumped off as I was straightening the stringer and punched me in the eye, I didn't even see it coming.

Thankfully it dissipated a lot of energy trying to flatten my nose, but the point of it hit me just below the tear duct, extremely lucky.

Rose just told me that I'm going back tomorrow, on my own, or perhaps a friend of hers in Landcare can join me. Going to try cable-tying the stringers to the pickets to keep them isolated. It's only temporary fencing until the seedlings are tall enough to fend for themselves, then we'll pivot it around to plant another section. It's two-meters high with about eight cold wires and three hot wires.

I could hear fallow at the bottom of the valley so it'd be nice to be able to take a rifle in one day.

Today we're chainsawing trees as usual :-)

Many years ago, I was straining up a top barb and made the mistake of hanging the 12" fence pliers on the barb itself about two feet to my right.
Yep,,,,,, you guessed it,, the barb snapped and the next burr along hooked into the pliers as it recoiled and propelled the pliers straight into my cheek bone.

As with Blade,,,,,,,, another lucky escape.

saffron milk caps .... delicious!
My fiance loves hunting for mushrooms.
Last year she found a heap of wood blewits and saffron milk caps. The flavours were truly amazing.

Thanks for sharing that BP, I'd better take my lady out to the forest this weekend :drinks:

Wooded blewit are incredibly delicious, deep blue/purple colour... they smelt like orange juice but strangely didn't taste like it once cooked.
We found them in Chambers Gully below the old green waste dump right alongside the trail.

Re: What did you do today?

Well, recently I purchased four wind down trailer jacks, and I just finished welding them onto the stanchion legs that I made to lift
my shooting rig up off the ute tray so I can drive out from underneath it.
Prior to this I had to slide beams through it,,,, and then with a series of hydraulic jacks slowly lift it. Disconnect the 12v system etc.
This whole procedure used to take up to half a day.

Now the whole process is completed in 15 minutes.
All I have to do is lower the tray sides,, slide each stanchion leg into its socket, and wind.

Next on my list is to remove my original drive motor on the rotating platform,, and replace it with as new 24 v motors that incorporate left and right
rotation, variable speed, and automatic brake setup that will eliminate the bit of free play that I have currently.
