Rose and I spent the afternoon trekking into the bush to check an electric deer fence for our local Landcare group.
Very wet, very windy, very cold, and bloody awesome :-)
I saw 5.9C once on my windspeed meter, but mostly it varied between 6.2C and 6.7C. The meter doesn't measure windchill but it must've been near freezing with the wind gusting from 13mph up to 21mph.

Love being in the bush!
Only 1600m in, dropping 220m, but 160m of the drop is in the last 550m. We did a lap of the 500m fence from both directions so the entire length got inspected by both of us. All good, so we should be putting seedlings in there very soon now.

Looks like winter is settling in there as it turns into summer here. However we have cool rainy weather here today under 20C.

Took my 58 out for a hunt and was forced to watch these 2 feed 30m away from me for about 10 minutes completely unable to do anything as they were in the neighbours place :(

Went into town for an echo cardiac stress test, no issues found but I won't know for sure until the doctor gets the report. People have been telling me it's bloody hard work so I was all revved up for a workout. It really wasn't anything much, felt like I'd walked about halfway to our bottom block is all :-) Don't know what my heart rate peaked at but I did see 180bpm, which the guys told me was very good. I got off the treadmill for the ultrasound figuring that was just the first of a bunch of increasingly difficult tests - but that was the whole thing done.

Just fire-formed some brass in my three .303's and chronographed them. Surprisingly my No4Mk1* Longbranch makes 150fps more than both my No1Mk3* Lithgows with the exact same ammo.

Is there much difference in chamber or throat?

I haven't done chamber casts of any of them as I don't consider them to be precision rifles.
But I want fire-formed brass I can get measurements from and to make sure I size my brass to fit the tightest chamber so it works in all of them. I will get some throat measurements though, just for the record.

Today I found something you might be interested in, if you hunt in Kuitpo forest ( I'll be there next week) I could stash it and send you a location

Well.....I think technically you can still hunt unalienated public land.....and game reserves which are technically public land.....but buggered if I know anyone who's ever found the former, and the latter is only during duck season....

It's a bit biblical in the humidity department here so I finally made a sheath for this mutant.

It was going the be a Wakizashi but I buggered the end of the tang and had to turn it into a short (230mm blade) pseudo-cutlass, Japanese differential hardening aside.

Re: What did you do today?Thinking about painting

Post by Wm.Traynor » 01 Jul 2022, 7:09 pm

...............................my old Model 25 Gecado, circa 1959. My SIL painted it when he was 14, 30 years ago. I dragged it from the safe's darkest corner when mould was discovered, to find that not only was the stock affected but the steel parts too. What kind of paint did that boy put on my gun? Only thinking at this stage as I am fully booked for projects and stuff besides, it's damn cold in the garage :problem:

Went to a poultry show with my fiancé for her birthday today, she come home with some modern game bantams and a couple of Belgian D'Anvers ( mine allegedly lol ). Also, after 3 years of owning it,I finally stripped and replaced all the work cables, string, and draw length modules on my Oneida Black Eagle bow, attached a sight ( I hate sights but my eyes don't work so well for bare bow any more ), and fixed up the bow quiver all in preparation for hunting again.

Still cleaning up my Gecado; in particular the screw hole and screw for the washer, sent off an order to customairseals.com (thanks No. !) for new parts to renovate the poor old thing, polished off the nicks in the piston and went for my daily walk like a good boy.

Spent the day with Landcare putting in 300 tree seedlings in an area of bush.
Not too bad today except for when it was windy and/or raining and/or cold :-)
Rose and I made two trips up and down the hill with a stretcher carrying the seedlings in - pretty buggered by the end.

Saw a sambar and ranged it at 455m but 165mm lower down in the bottom of the valley.

I had my first workout in about a year. I used to powerlift at heavyweight and could shift some weight but in late 40's its all borrowed time now. Worst thing is I get in the gym with a plan to just take it easy, work on flexibility, joint longevity and some cosmetic gains.....until the first girl half my age comes in or some young buck starts lifting weights in front of the mirror then its like Im back in 1992 with walkman in fanny pack piling weights onto the bench press. I could even hear Bryan Adams songs playing in my ears.:D
Will be bloody sore sad middle aged man tomorrow.
