House and doggies sitting for the son and his family in Frankghanistan at the moment (they are away in Brisvegas getting washed out I suppose). While it was hot it was OK in the morning so I got the lawns mown and the edges done. Watered all the potted plants and put on a sprinkler on the front lawn.
By then it was getting a bit hot outside, so moved to inside maintenance (in the aircon), replacing/repairing cupboard and draw handles in the kitchen and cleaning and lubing drawer slides, similarly in No. 1 and 2 granddaughters bedrooms.
Sitting down working through, I think cold beer no. 5 now

I Took my new Ruger American .22LR to the range! First time ever shooting a rifle. Only had irons sights so it was a bit tricky! Wasn't expecting much, I was just famalirising myself with loading, shooting, aiming, being concious of safety etc.

I managed to get around 80% of my fired shots to hit the A3 size target at 50m, but out of the 10 shots i fired at 100m, not a single hole in my paper target haha. Very humbling!

I stopped past venture hunting Brisbane on the way home, picked up some rings and a Stoeger 3-9x40 scope - $200 inc. fitting.
Excited to go and sight it in in the new year, and see if i cant put some holes through the 100m.

Awesome :-)

If the rifle is zeroed at 50m your shots will be dropping between about 150mm and 300mm at 100m, depending on your choice of ammo. I've just been shooting the Henry .22 at 235m and was holding around about two-meters over the target. Target is a 750mm-square steel plate, so roughly holding three targets high - the target is totally obscured by the muzzle to it's hard to be precise.

I did some Long Gong (.22LR, 275m, 8"/6"/4" gongs) practice yesterday while I was out filling the cow troughs, then we went into town and did an air-pistol shoot. We both shot our best scores to date, Rose bettered hers by 21pt, and I bettered mine by 31pt.

My mate was out this morning for our weekly lever-action practice, then I took him down to where I have the Long Gong targets set up. Played a bit with the Scoped Ruger, then we tried the iron-sighted Henry at the 235m mark on a 750mm-square 5mm plate. Took me five shots before we heard the satisfying "tink" of a tiny bullet hitting a large steel plate. I wanted to try my light .38 Special loads at long range as well but we ran out of time. In the Rossi at 200m they'll have more than ten meters of drop :-)

That blows my mind having to compensate so heavily for that sort of distance!

I want to get it dialed in at 50m for taking rabbits next year, but will be playing around between 50-150m at the range over the coming months for sure! I'm hooked already haha.

You can learn a lot shooting .22LR at long ranges due to the exaggerated trajectory and wind drift. Once you can consistently get your shots into a group, then start testing other ammunition and you'll find out which the rifle groups best with. Then buy a case of that and keep practicing.

Looks like a White Christmas here this year. Got another couple of inches of snow and then it's going to be a very cold weekend. It's supposed to be a low of -15C at night. Then Christmas Eve another couple of inches of snow to add to the existing coating of snow. Had to get out yesterday and run the plow.

Today I had the morning by myself so I went down the Coorong and watched the sun rise, went home and gave the dog a massive deer shank for Xmas, then practiced with my greatsword. Then picked up my lad and went up to mums for Xmas lunch. Pretty chill day and for once the Xmas depression didn't kick in,despite the crappy year I've had

I struggle without using one of those, I'm finding fine gauge wire impossible without it.

More powder scoops today. This job was on the agenda perhaps 20yrs ago. :violin:

Made 8 more from 30.06 cases. The two largest i made perhaps about 1985 when I first started loading the 12g. I used an old donated Lee Loader. The scoop and instructions were missing. It was just given to me in an old biscuit tin IIRC.

Free floated my 22-250. Last time I used it I had unexpected misses and when I shot a group it was in the realms of 6" at 100m so I chalked it down to the barrel finally being worn out.
Decided to take the 4-12×40 redfield off it and put it on my 308,when I pulled it out of the same I noticed the action move in the stock, checked the action screws and they were loose ! Tightened them up only to discover the barrel was touching the forend so I dremelled out the barrel channel and viola ! fully floated barrel. Took it to work to check everything and it was printing 1½" groups at 110m. Not as good as I'd like but better than it was. And considering I have done zero load development and was shooting out the car window....I don't think its too shabby. Might be worth postponing the barrel swap to 308 I had planned. Also, was shooting 2 different loads, and they both grouped the same and to the same spot. One is 40gn nosler varmaggedons at around 4200fps,the other 50gn sierra varminters and around 3700fps ( I think ). Overall was fairly pleased with my day,and used it to good effect later on the work cull permit :)

I wouldn't say we're in drought, but there are big fires already in the western side of Vic. On the 26th I believe the Grampians fire was 72,000 hectares (180,000ac) and would have covered Melbourne.
