Wet molded a piece of green veg tan roo hide scrap from my tanner mate to the grip of my recurve. Overall quite pleased with the results. Used a technique often used for sword hilts wherein one wraps rope around the wet leather to imprint it

Winter has settled in here with a snowstorm a few days ago. A lot of sloppy wet snow that was a mess to clean up. Another sloppy wet snowstorm coming this week followed by a hard freeze with temps dropping to 4F(-15C). Christmas will be 20F(-6C) during the day. So with outdoor activities being tamped down, I have turned attention to indoors and I have a lot of projects I need to do with guns, reloading and general workshop and clean up from summer. My dad bought me a new walnut tabletop to re do a reloading bench so he helped me get all of that done and it's mostly been rebuilt.

Took one of the grandsons fishing at the local jetty. He caught a 32cm Pinkie. But unfortunately forgot to take a pic.

Got rid of a heap of scrap metal, swapped some home butchered ducks, chooks, rabbits, and pigeons for 2 racks of lamb,a huge piece of uncut scotch fillet, and a dozen abalone with the bosses for Xmas, and just spent 2 hours down the beach surf fishing. Been a good day.

I suspect he shoots them at very long ranges, where mild is probably fine.

You would be correct. Today was short to medium range with 223 and 260 .

Today I busted my arse up the goat hill for the first time in nearly 6 months. Between covid and inactivity this year because of my knees ( I'm terrified of pushing too hard and f***ing them for months like I did at the butchers ) I've lost a lot of non existent fitness. So I don't mind admitting this hunt has nearly f***ed me !
Didn't even get 500m from the house and saw a fallow doe with fawn at foot around 150m away. Had it been half as far and the fawn twice as big the hunt would have ended there. As it was I had the pleasure of watching them a bit before mum decided enough was enough and bounded off.
Got to the top of the hill and sat down for yet another breather,a drink, and a bite to eat. Didn't take long before I heard bleats and branches cracking in the scrub between the 2 main dams. Determining they were heading for the dam on the right,I got myself into position down wind ( not that there was much wind) and slowly stalked in. First thing I saw was the farmers cattle,5 of them,on my end of the dam. Working through the bushes I spotted the goats right up the other end about 60m away. I watched them a bit,was about to drop one by the water when a bigger one herded a nanny into view, turned side on,and collapsed with a shoulder shot. Quick reload and the one by the water followed suit. All over in 5 seconds. Could have shot another one but didn't. Who needs a lever gun ? Lol.
Now I'm down the bottom of the hill, cooling myself and some goat legs by the creek, before tackling the small-butstilltiring- hill back to the car. A beer awaits !

I have 5 blocks i can hunt. I used to have along the lines of a dozen or more. One of those blocks is dads, which he shoots on himself a lot. One place has 5 other shooters on it,one I've hunted for 40 years, one is a vineyard I helped set up 25 years ago,and one is the one today which only me and the farmers son can hunt and its bloody hard terrain.

The pre Christmas winter storm is here. Right now it is snowing steadily, however it is due to warm up and turn to rain tonight. It will then rain all night with temps hitting about 5C early in the morning. Around noon the temp will begin to drop and it will hit -18C with a wind chill of -35C. It's pretty uncommon here to have that violent of a swing in temps. Also the rain will melt a lot of this snow and then with a hard freeze it will freeze all that water.

The new reloading bench is finished and in place. I just need to bolt the presses to their mounts, remount the shelf, restock the shelf with bullets and primers and then fill in some holes with wood putty. I will do a quick video on it for Youtube. Also working on a 32 ACP project for Youtube among other things.

Do these cartridges do any damage at all to 5mm mild at these ranges?

Have you tested mild to determine minimum distances and thicknesses for different cartridges?

Needed a break from Mrs OB. Headed down to the local lead mine about a 10 minute drive.
I was home two hours later. 40cm and 50cm. :) Must buy more bait. That was the last of last summers.
