I’m thinking about a new toolbox for the back of the ute. I like this Faber, a low height that won’t impede on my vision and the drawers on the side. This box is pretty much what I’m after but at $2860, I was wondering if anyone knows of anything similar but at a cheaper price?

I'm sure you could find a cheap p.o.s Chinese made one that's tin-foil thick and the drawers runs on plastic ball bearings :sarcasm:

Yeah, that’s right. You get what you pay for, maybe I just should spend the cash. When it’s still on the ute in 10 years time it’ll be worth it.

Faber do make fairly good tools generally.

Bloody hell, almost $3000. I understand buying quality gear, but at that price.

Porsche costs more, will it be a better car because it costs more?

I’ve got a Faber copy at the moment, Aussie made too, had it for about 10 years and it’s still a good tool box that’s lived it’s life on the back of the ute, which is hard on them.
I just like this design better, and if I could find something similar in a different brand, hopefully half the price, I’d go for it.

Ute's are notoriously hard on toolboxes. If you actually put stuff in it and drive farther than picking up the kids from soccer 90% of the stuff around won't last. Even gear advertised for that specific purpose.

When you load them up with tools, they weigh a ton. Never seen any drawers on rollers that can handle the weight of being full of tools and last any length of time. I've got a 1-11 contractors box that has been through two sets of rollers. Every second ute around here has a toolbox bolted on the back, seen examples of just about every brand, the only ones that don't collapse are the "truck" boxes that have no rollers but they are a bitch to pull the drawer out and get back in when loaded up.
I reckon smaller drawers are the go 'cause you can't put too much weight in them. Mine has full width drawers, ( 1200mm ) and they just get too heavy when you fill them up with spanners etc.

It doesn't last and you can't use any liquid lube as the dust just sticks to it and creates a bigger problem. The flaw in design is that there are just 4 small bearings to carry the whole drawer. Rattling around on the back of the ute with 20+ kilos of tools per drawer on 4 small contact points leads to failure. Of coarse you can put less in but then there's too much room around them and everything bounces around and you wind up with crap everywhere. Problem is, that I carry tools for maintenance and break-downs, you never know what you might need, so a comprehensive tool kit is required. I wish this box had 6 smaller drawers instead of the 3 large drawers, fit as much in but twice the bearings to carry the load.
There's also the trouble of " Oh look, there's more room, what else can I carry in there". :unknown:

"The flaw in design is that there are just 4 small bearings to carry the whole drawer."

That being the case my idea was pointless. I assumed no bearings.

Faber Ute box’s are excellent quality, they’re pretty well standard kit amongst remote mechanics and contractors.
They’re rated and guaranteed for the vibration punishment of miles of corrugated roads. Buy once cry once.
