Why not lop a coupla inches off the Marlin?

In the OP you talk about new technology.
You can always look backward.
Personally love the old stuff.
Most guns newer than me are not interesting.
Love Blackpowder and stuff made basically pre 1930.

Consider getting an old style lever or pump gun, maybe a single shot breechloader or a muzzleloader.
All great fun and legitimate hunting weapons

Yeah, I like Black Powder in that,,,,, I wouldn't mind having a bronze cannon,, but that's as far as my interest goes for black powder.
I used to have an oldish lever top ejecting rifle, but got rid of that.

I came close to owning a semi auto/auto in 7.62 NATO but decided it was a bit over the top for the type of hunting that I was doing at the time.
(that was of course pre Pt Arthur)
I can't even remember now,, it was probably an SLR.
I only briefly picked it up,, looked at it,, but already decided nah.
I do remember the dealer saying "7.62 NATO" as I looked at it.
That was Bob Meyer from down Edenhope Vic way,, and only a month later he had a heart attack and died.

But what a collection of arms he had,,,,,,,,,,
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

Pre Port Arthur was a lifetime ago.
Buy an SKS for $69 up.
Liked the look of the Mini 14 in 7.62X39 myself but couldn't afford one. Had a spiffy 10/22 though and a 12g semi auto.
Would still like a nice Browning A5.

Get rid of a Marlin to buy a Winchester, sounds like the right way to go...
