Kursk submarine disaster

Post by Oldbloke » 29 Jul 2022, 9:43 pm

I just watched a movie about a Russian sub disaster in Barents Sea near Norway 12 August 2000.

Makes the Russian Navy look pretty incompetent. Yeh, I know it's a movie.

But just makes me wonder if the army isn't much better and could explain why their headway in Ukraine has been pretty slow. Especially since they certainly out number the Ukranians in a big way.

Apparently Pootin refused offers of assistance from other navy's for 5 days. Sheesh.

Arrogance and pride is a dangerous combination when the lives of your own service man are on the line, life is cheap in Russia

Have a read of Robert Moore's "A Time To Die", but there are probably more recent looks at it.

The narration is not so great, but this explains the failings in Russian equipment and weaponry

1st rank Captain Marko Ramius Commanding Officer of Red October would never have made any rookie mistakes like that.

But on a more serious note, I should watch that one OB

It is a movie after all but bases on the book "A Time To Die" which I gather bladeracer has read.
My impressions were:
Poor training.
Poor maintenance.
Out dated equipment.
Life is cheap.
Selling equipment.
Cover-ups.

I think it all came down to lots of money, 90% of which went into people's pockets instead of into the project, as has been the case for decades in Russia.

I watched a movie, it showed the ss and the nazi as really dumb, also they marching on sentry duty and couldn't see the allowed forces people just walking behind them.

Another strange thing, they always speak in this strange English accent.

Its a movie, its fiction doesn't have to be true, just based on true events.
When good men and women can’t speak the truth, when facts are inconvenient, when integrity and character no longer matter, when ego and self-preservation are more important than national security — then there is nothing left to stop the triumph of evil

Yep, when you win you can portray them as you want.

Just like the graves at the cemeteries in France and elsewhere are white for allied soldiers and black headstones for the enemy that lost the war.

Most people, to varying degrees, are credulous or sceptical according to the authority of the source of information.
For example if a climate scientist such as Greta Thunberg makes a pronouncement then for some it is the absolute truth.
Up to the late 60's early 70's 'the truth' always came with a plummy English accent. These days it largely come with an American accent.
