Olde time fasteners

Post by Noisydad » 17 Sep 2022, 12:13 pm

There are plenty of shed dwellers here that like making stuff and need olde timey wood screws and such. You know, the slotted head steel and brass wood screws sort of stuff that the big green shed have never heard of.
Here’s a link to an eBay supplier of these hard to find things called “Vintage Screws”…

Thanks for that Noisey, I was trying to get hold of some just the other week, yeah, 4 local hardware stores, no go.
I needed some to mount some coat hooks I had forged for a blacksmithing display and stall we had at a local event. Had to go with some black phillips ones instead. They sold but would have looked better with "period" screws.

Now there’s a ridiculous coincidence! Mounting hand forged coat hooks is EXACTLY the reason I went scrounging around in search of such things!
In the last two years I’ve spent a lot time in my smithy and have turned the caper into a pretty handy side gig by selling stuff on Etsy and at a couple of local makers markets.

That's interesting Noisydad, I haven't noticed the lack of slotted head screws in the stores, it's a sad state of affairs.
I've still got boxes in various sizes in brass and steel.

How can we find your Etsy store?

Same here. I'm puzzled.

The link doesn’t want to copy so you can search for NoisyDadsWorkshop (case sensitive).

The finish used on most of it is a wax brew made from 50/50 bees wax and raw linseed oil. The work is cleaned on a wire wheel and heated just enough to make the wax brew melt and drain the steel. If I judge the heat right I can get some pretty colours from blue to bronze in it.
I normally remove all the mill scale from the steel before forging as it makes a prettier job of it.
