Post by chilliman » 11 May 2014, 8:13 pm

I'm rewatching SPR, I haven't seen it for a few years. the opening never fails to take my breath away.

apparently the budget was around $70m USD and grossed over $400m.

I remember seeing it at the cinema and was absolutely stunned at the time.

Best single movie but the Band of brothers series was done better overall.

"the Pacific" didn't rate highly but was watchable-

All three are VERY accurate equipment wise(There's the collector nerd coming out).

As above, I like Band of Brothers over the Pacific and SPR, but they had the same lead production crew from memory. They are all very good though!

I also thought Lone Survivor was pretty cool, and it was also pretty cool that the actual survivor Markus Luttrel was in the movie.

Was a good watch...
I enjoyed Enemy at the Gates though, extremely refreshing to find a WW2 movie that wasnt involving US honour/gut/glory blah blah for once!

I'll put in my vote for The Outlaw Josie Wales - a U.S. civil war movie by and staring Clint Eastwood. The pistols he carries get a bit mixed up but a pretty good story none the less.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Probably the best movie Eastwood made in my humble opinion.

Agree Saving Private Ryan is one of the best.

Too many of the recent ones are just American stroking their ego.

+1 for above.

Pasting my comment from another war movie conversation here earlier...

The point of all of them seems to be how bad ass 'Merica is and how they kill hundreds for every soldier they lost.

Like at the end of Black Hawk Down it say something like the US lost 18 Rangers or whatever, but does this "subtle" brag that they killed 3,000 enemies or something in the process?

Bragging about cock size basically.

SPR was one of the earlier good ones though.

Enemy At The Gates was a great one.

Shooter too. A little hollywood but still good. Can't say the same for 'his latest Lone Survivor.

Cool story, didn't think the movie did much for it though.

Das Boot, Come and See, and Pans Labrynth are all easily better than SPR. Unconventional ww2 movies certainly, but war movies nonetheless.

For character development, the feeling of being 'in the action' and poignancy, my vote goes to Band of Brothers.

Semi-war movie.

I always liked The Deer Hunter with Deniro.

Deer Hunter was good.

Crazy scene with using the Russian Roulette to escape the POW camp.

Not quite that old, but one to take you back... Schindler's List.

Watched that again the other day for the first time in years.

Not a war movie, guess you'd call it a military movie even though it's a bit sci-fi...

Predator (not the latest ones, only the original).

The D-Day landing in SPR is breath taking. But for flat out watch-ability, I'm a Platoon guy.

Something about the Vietnam conflict resonates with me more than WWI, WWII. Probably the general time frame of the 60's, 70's. Music, etc.

Not to say that SPR, Great Escape, Kokoda, Beneath Hill 60 aren't great films though.
