Bloody Google Ads

Post by Lazarus » 10 May 2023, 3:53 pm

Is anyone else getting full screen google ad spamming on here?

It's only on this site for some reason.

I've got ad blocker running and have my google settings set for no ads but they come through anyway

Don't get full page, but a lot more pop-ups and the lower page pop-up. Website bandwidth has to be paid somehow, and we are not putting our hands in our pockets to pay for it. Would you prefer paid subscription only, so no ads?

I have no problem with the banner ads, they're not intrusive and as you say, the site has to pay for itself, but I don't think this is at the site's instigation.

At least 50% of them are google surveys.

Just today I'm getting a full-page advert when I click the arrow to go to the latest post in a thread. Not every time though, it seems to only be my first click when I come back for another look after a little while. It was happening on my phone yesterday.

I'm suspecting it's the chrome browser.

Hasn't happened using Samsung's native browser.

Hi guys,

I can shed some light on this.

Obviously, we have some ads on the site. Regarding the Full Screen popups between pages Lazarus reported, this is something Google took it upon itself to start running on the site as an experiment 1-2 weeks ago.

50% of visitors will have seen them, the other 50% not. Hence the different experience between members.

I wasn't aware they were running, to be honest. In any case, I've now disabled them. I agree, they're a bit much.

Thanks Aster.

The banner ads are fine, I've actually bought a couple of things from them, but google is getting uppity

Hey Lazarus,

All good. I appreciate the feedback.

As touched on above, the bills need to be paid, so we have some ads; them's the breaks.

Ads can certainly be excessive though, and become counter productive at that point IMO.

I think in Google's mind if adding extra Ads X, Y and Z increases revenue by 1% it's a success. It doesn't take into account if the change is massively irritating for everyone

I'm happy to just cover the bills and provide the site free for members, I'm not trying to squeeze every last cent out of the thing.

Anyway, Google got one past the keeper here with automatically running an experiment with some extra ads. It's fixed now.
See you on the firing line.

I was one of the lab rats chosen to experience the ads because I’m special or because I would be massively irritated ?
