I don't see why, technologically, the body cameras can't be triggered automatically on removal of any police appliances, taser, sidearm, cuffs, pepper etc, from its place on the utility belt.

Or have them automatically record to a server from the time the device is fitted, police have to record any incidents they encounter via paperwork so those time stamps can be sent to the monitoring team to delete all footage that isn't within those time stamps.
Or have them manually activated by voice (Much like your alexa or google devices), whilst still would need manual activation it gets rid of the excuse that during the heat of the moment they didn't have time to reach and activate the body camera.

I think if you’re relying on body cams to weed out the bad eggs you have a bigger problem to address.
I’m not a fan of them. Split second decisions are not always the best with the benefit of hindsight.
Police have a position of trust and we’re sending the wrong message if we put cameras on them.

Granted the old lady incident was horrible and they proved valid. But I base that on police refusing to release the video. That in itself proves we had a seriously disturbed officer acting well outside normal.
A genuine bad egg and is being dealt with accordingly. But to impose measures across to force that are designed to monitor that particular individual.
How is that different that treating me like I’m just another Martin Bryant waiting to happen.
It’s not the right answer to the problem.
We have the right to trust our police force. And they have the duty to be deserving of it.
We don’t need a band aid solution by just strapping a camera on them. If someone’s not suited to the role it should have been addressed before then.
I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned

They are all valid points Womble, but the sheer number of cases of excessive force or other police misbehaviour being recorded would suggest that the problem isn't being addressed, ergo until it is, they are necessary for our protection.

They also serve as protection against spurious claims against police.
