Personally I think there is a lot of under estimation going on by some here. Yes we have had bad procurement in the past and I am sure that will continue into the future. But when it comes to boots on the ground our troops are pretty good so are a lot of the systems and other personnel that support them in logistics.

OB Lasers have come a long way over the last few years you see all sorts on You tube being used for different purposes from rust removal to one I saw the other day where the Chinese gov workers (council perhaps) were lopping the tops off trees with them absolutely amazing the speed accuracy and improved safety was amazing.

There wasn't much wrong with buying a French sub. Problem was Turnbullshit wanted to modify it to use a trolling motors with a car battery.

This is an interesting development. It's called "Ghost shark".

"Ghost Shark will provide Navy with a stealthy, long-range autonomous undersea warfare capability that can conduct persistent intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike."

We are about to give the yanks mega bucks and zero, yep zero guarantees that we will get a sub.

Not really that unbelievable OB

If you're a disabled pensioner and work a couple of hours more than they want you to, the gummint will move heaven and earth to reclaim money, "for the taxpayer".
After covid and all the Jobkeeper subsidies given to big business, those who actually cleaned up profit wise, were told repayment was voluntary and the taxpayer could suck a big one.

On war, I'm a little more pessimistic, next year sometime would be my guess.

I think in this day of hypersonic missiles and weaponised saterlites, distance no longer provides a safe haven.

Totally true, which is why we should be building them, by the thousand, instead of putting probably half a trillion into 3 or 4 subs that once sunk are irreplaceable.

If we can hold our adversaries at risk within their own attack parameters, they will be far more cautious.

Long range missiles on mobile launchers is how DPRK scares the US.

If they can, we can.

That's one of the main routes for our fuel,

""Our crude oil supplies come from the nearby country of Malaysia (about 27%), from Australia (about 22%) and the rest come from a wide range of places around the world. Some of those places are very close to Australia – Indonesia (7%), New Zealand (5%) and Papua New Guinea (5%) particularly.

About 40% of our refined fuel products originate from Australian-refined crude oil. It follows that the rest of our refined oil products are refined overseas. We get 27% of our imported refined products from Korea, 26% from Singapore, 15% from Japan, 10% from Malaysia, 9% from China and the remainder from the rest of the world. Those refineries overseas get their own crude from a wide range of places.""

We need to be able to bring some hurt to anyone trying to mess with that, from a looooong way away.

""The program has risen in cost from $30 to $45 billion despite a revised delivery of six ships rather than nine.""

We're at it again, signing contacts with others to make our own defence equipment instead of building a sovereign capacity.

Seems the "pay more - get less" philosophy is now de rigueur.

Having worked at the Naval Dockyard building and refitting ships. I know we have the capability but the reality is that it is not efficient and costly. The time it takes to build or refit a ship is just so long that there are stages during the build where not everyone at the shipyard is able to work. You would need to have about 4 ships on the go at different stages to really be economical.

That's the problem in a nutshell Larry.

Because we don't aggressively market our abilities, we seem to stand by watching others do it.

We don't even mine our own minerals, in the main, imagine our position if we had been allowed to do what Whitlam planned, and nationalise our sovereign wealth, so that we got the benefits, not the US and Britain.

We are the Sucky Country
