fill the case to the top with FFFG black powder and you will get a much better load. More velocity and power than you can with any of the smokeless powders.
PS filling to the top just happens to be 40 grn of BP

Read it again Larry, Jackaroo may have had his tongue firmly in cheek. No such thing, technically, as a 40-40, the mis-print would have been 44-40 although the 38-40 is actually a 40 calibre projectile originally loaded with 38g of powder (38WCF) later with 40g (38-40)

Yep ok paradolia not a face but a cartridge and gun I have had a lot of fun with hence I instantly saw 44-40. The advice is probably the same however it would have been a BP cartridge by the sound of the name. BP is highly under rated IMHO. I am not a muzzle loader or really a BP guy other than that cartridge.

It's definitely fun :-)
I'm looking to load some .38 Special with black.

Drives home the fact that just because loading data is written in B&W its always a good idea to cross reference and not take anything written for granted if ADI can make such a glaring typo.

What really matters is that people need to understand that load data are not carved in stone. It's like reading a recipe book, it just gives you ideas and you adapt the recipes to suit your own tastes. With some experience you can work up your own load data based on things like case volume, bore volume, required velocity, available powders, and such things without needing somebody else's load data.
