Security lights and cameras for house

Hi gents, Im looking to install some basic options to my mothers house. She is in a quiet hamlet, about 400 people on small acreage, no breakins yet ,touchwood, but Id like to tighthen things up.


Main one was a basic camera system we could both log into with phones. Are the harvey norman/generic store options where you get a few cameras for a few hundred buckss any good? I'm not after a true security/alarm system( she wouldnt be interested) and was hoping to avoid paying 2k etc.

Also regards outside lights, I think a sensor light would drive her mad, I'm assuming having a few spotlights around the house with master switch she can flick from inside wouldnt be too hard for a sparky to install? More of a deterrant if she hears a bump in the night type thing.

its more about her safety or peace of mind when actually home,aka cameras to see what it outside when she is inside at night. Not preventing or recording burglars when she is out etc. We both have the same view of that, its only material posessions.

Any other ideas feel free to suggest

I put in a eufy home-based 3 last year. With a ringer, x2 outdoor solar, 2 indoor PTZ and motion detector it was about $2K. So far it's worked well.

That's about the average cost. Mine, (installed about 2 years ago ) was $1800.

Slowly been putting together a Eufy system over the last few months as funds permit.
Started with a S380 Homebase3 and a 2K doorbell from Bunnings - $294 and $198
E340 Floodlight camera and a E330 4K camera from JB, on special at the time $359 and $199
Last week purchased another 2 E330 4K cameras unfortunately no longer on special but JB priced matched and knocked $50 off the price of each camera. $249 each.

With hindsight I probably should have spent the extra for the 2 camera doorbell but not a major problem. The doorbell camera won't detect a human until they are about 10 feet from the camera but has no problem triggering on every large truck that drives past.

The Homebase3 is supposed to have AI, face recognition and track intruders from camera to camera. Is a bit 'hit & miss". Most of the time it works but sometimes it has trouble telling the difference between a pigeon and a human.

Went through the list of 'saved faces' and couldn't nut-out who this sheila was. Then it hit me the camera must have been pointing at the TV when I was doing the initial setup and it had latched onto the face of Rita Panahi

The E340 Floodlight camera will auto pan & tilt and track an intruder and has the beginnings of a Sentry Gun if I can ever nut-out how to attach a machine gun to it

It ain't all roses, I had problems with my old phone not having the correct codecs for 4K. Customer support from AU was crickets & tumbleweeds but after a few emails with the bot in the US I escalated things to a real human and to her credit she made a genuine effort. So if your mother has an older phone it may be a problem.

There are reports of problems with the Eufy solar cameras. Apparently the clear coat on the solar panels isn't holding up to the Aussie sun all that well.

When my back account recovers I'll be adding an SSD to the Homebase to increase storage.

A search of youtube should produce a heap of videos.

Its pretty good. From the phone I can leave it with the IR which they can't see, or you can turn the light on and use the camera speaker to tell them to piss off as I've called the cops and then set the alarm off. The alarm for the anti tamper is good too.

Interesting. I got everything up and running first pop with the Samsung FE20. I put in a Samsung SSD of large size which is good enough for 6 months of data. No problems retrieving either when a Karen decided to have a go when I wasn't home. I've got the 2 camera doorbell and its pretty good as well. There is no blind spots on the property and you can't move through the house without the internal ones getting you either. The internal ones are as cheap as chips. I found one of the external solar units actually got flat over winter with the sun being lower but now its not a problem. Just ever few months get the ladder out, 3 hours charge on USB-C and its good to go. Ditto for the front door bell. The great things is you can add extra devices as budget or needs allow and its all pretty seamless. The other great thing about Eufy is no monthly contract. You pay that's it. Wifi you are already paying for.

Well there's a solar function that you can watch the trend of how many mAh per day the battery receives and how much the battery is getting charged each day. Even if its poor, as long as you put it at a height that's easy to then the battery should be good for 3-4 months before having to spend 3 hours charging.
