Grampians NP Fire

Post by Oldbloke » 06 Jan 2025, 2:10 pm

The Grampians NP is 1,672 sq km.
ABC reports about 760sq km has been burnt in the recent bush fire. (This Includes some farm land) This equates to about 40 to 45% of the NP.
Also 4 homes and 40 other buildings.

I read recently that NPs are actually filling in the Water points. But have unable to confirm this. It certainly seems to me that its rare that they conduct controlled burns to mitigate the risk of bush fires in NPs if any at all. Perhaps I'm wrong?

This adds up to a lot of unnecessary habitat destruction and loss of wildlife.

Is this:
Neglect?
Incompetence?
Or a criminal act?
On behalf of the government department responsible?
(Parks Victoria)

This seems to be a pattern for all National (neglected) Parks I've visited over the past few years.

Seems to me SFs are better looked after.

Thoughts?

All of the above. We need a royal commission into Parks, then shut them down and give us back our public land.

Well, it would be a start I guess.

I don't think the average punter understands what's going on. The whole NP think has simply become a joke. But not a very funny one.

I agree with Blade.

I just travelled from Adelaide through to Ballarat on the 8th Jan,,, but cannot comment on the burnt areas as I skirted around the edges.

But yep,, in my opinion, all such parks/forests should be control burned every two/three years.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

(Talking about shortages of large air tankers)

"He suggested one solution would be taking advantage of the Defence Force's outgoing fleet of a dozen C-130 Hercules aircraft.

"Why don't we keep half a dozen and repurpose them as aerial tankers, so then we would have a sovereign capability here?"

    That would require common sense on the part of politicians. Not gonna happen. Probably bury them.
