Cowboy shoot this morning, came home to rest, checked the cows, just finished lunch and cooling off. Got some rifles and pistols to clean then load some ammo.

Went to the invasion day protest wearing my “respect to colonisers past, present and emerging” shirt to make the commies cry. Was pretty boring to be honest.

I whacked the big blue flag out the front on the big letterbox so the passing long-weekend terrorists could see it, and the missus and I did a run around the joint checking on all the stock.
Feeding all the animals so they all come running when we do the visitors feeding tours, in the SxS which we call "Mr Whippy" because it brings all the goodies and stops every 30 seconds.
Shot a big billy between the eyes who'd been causing some mischief, and took him to the pig trap. The six other unfortunate troublemakers (different species) from yesterday we chucked in have been completely eaten, bugger me, batteries in the trail-cam were flat. So some pigs to sort out when the time comes available, quite a few by the looks..
Then, the 7 gay yard invaders turned up when we were back at the farmhouse to have a quiet G&T to celebrate our luck in being here in Aus, and one of the stags had a huge rip in his leg from jumping a fence probably, he's a big 240kg 14 pointer and I just didn't feel like getting smashed in the yards, so out came the dart gun and I whacked him in the rump with 5cc of Bicillin. That gave him a surprise. That's the same stuff my wife sticks in the black fellas when the cops bring them in with their feet rotting off from diabetes from drinking beer all day because it lasts a month (strong slow-release anti-biotic) and they won't come back for medical help unless they're in handcuffs. I suppose I'd hate being hit with a big aluminum dart too that fires it's load when it bottoms out in your rump.
But the awesome light show from the incredible storms this evening just made the day. Incredible constant sheet lightning. To share it with my wife was the best end to an awesome "aussie" day.
Australia is the best country in the world, certainly endowed with everything we would ever need here to rule the world if we really wanted, and how lucky are we to be able to turn hard work and determination into being here and taking all the good stuff in.
Happy Australia Day.

Did the morning water-run, checked the dog traps and game cameras - no results.

I have lit up a pile of old fence-posts the day before, so we might be able to recover the wire and netting, and dispose of it in the dump.

In the process of looking around for a few more stumps to add to the dwindling fire, I find this little guy.

Stokes (or Gidgee) skink (Ergonia stokesii).
This one is a young adult, from what I could see.
They give birth to live young, and live in small family groups.
All their scales have a pair of rear-ward facing spikes, which make them nigh impossible to pull out of a log, when they wedge themselves in.
Whenever I've caught one, they never seem to bother to struggle.

Had to leave that stump alone...

VERY common in this area; Cute little fella.

Had to go to our other place today, it involved a bit of highway driving.
Bloody caravans!
Heaps of dudes on the way home from their shooting weekends, all their quads and vehicles covered in dust and grass seeds.
Contrasted opposite to prior to the long weekend, everyone heading out packing the servo eateries and bowsers with polished, shiny utes with massive tyres, perfectly clean quads even down to armor-all'd tyres and spotless gear.
Good on 'em. Great to see people getting out and having fun and braving the heat.

Geeze it's been hot here mate. I hope you're getting some cool weather so the hiking doesn't put you into heat-stroke.

Mid 20s. I only have a window of a few days then the heat hits again. But 40kmh gusting wind, and changing direction a fair bit. So, not expecting much.

Mate that's awesome, the temperature. At least you won't get any surprises with the wind direction!

Super hot here, we left to spread out some Graslan granules along some as-yet-not-fenced high country dozed tracks and it was already 40'. But we were chased back by a whopping green-clouded storm, which cooled it right down. At least it washed the granules in.

The deer know how to keep cool. Keep an eye out on the wallows mate.
