Which paint ?

Post by Die Judicii » 16 Mar 2025, 9:42 pm

I know that water based paint will adhere to and last for a fair while when applied to PVC Stormwater pipe.

My question to anyone that knows,,,,, Would spray thinners based Etch Primer be any better or not at all ?

If it is a proper etch primer you may have a problem with a paint bubbling or PVC melting other than that I don't know

If it's a paint you'd like to use on your MDT poly stock mate, the Rustoleum flat matt camo colours stick really well to that without a primer.
In fact it's better without a primer, because if it wears or chips, you won't see a different colour underneath. And they are recommended to use on plastic without a primer.

All that's necessary is to degrease the stock first, I use simple enamel thinners and it has no effect on the poly material the stock is made of.

And if it's for the steel mate, Caswell has some great products you can get posted to your door.
I have used these products a bit for jobs for others, and myself for some fun stuff.
I am about to do a few rifles using this product, it self-mixes and is very good.
I also use this companies steel and stainless steel blackening products when doing jobs or mods.
I have always blasted the steel surfaces first, then I don't have any issues with chipping. Again, this product does not use a primer.

You can get a simple cheap sandblasting kit, and the blast media for stainless or carbon steels (different) from Supercheap or E-bay.

And although it sounds kind of weird, lightly blasting any poly stock with garnet will make paints stick like you wouldn't believe.

Many plastic stocks, especially the cheapies sold on Howas and Tikkas, Rems and Savages etc, are made from recycled ice-cream buckets and have a very smooth surface, despite the feel of them.
The sharp edges on the garnet media make paint key and stick incredibly well. Without primer and the resulting different colour underneath.

I did try some cerakote and really, it's quite tough but it's easily worn off by someone like yourself who actually uses your rifles in the field all the time.

Thanks fellas,, I have my own sand blasting gear and a fairly large supply of garnet,,,,,,, so I'll lightly blast it and go the Rustoleum Flat Matt pathway.
