Western Oz - Surrendered Firearms .. why?

Post by dagedsta » 03 Sep 2025, 7:17 pm

Hi guys,
Maybe I am missing a trick here .. wouldn't it have been prudent for our WA likeminded brothers (and sisters) to try sell those firearms they just surrendered?
Ok, some may have been given a stipend for their trouble but surely that would not have met or exceeded the value of them?
Is there something more nuanced going on?
Maybe for some of the low-value firearms, sure. But from what I saw from some of the available footage where their cheeky minister and police were gloating about getting some "ninety thousand firearms off the streets" (it's enough to make you vomit .. they were NOTHING OF THE SORT, having been safely stored by responsible and licensed gun-owners) at least a bloody good number (say 10%? more?) good / nice / better than nice quality firearms gone to scrap rather than sending over to us, where we could likely have bettered their re-buy state government offer and too given them a new lease at life?
Was it a missed opportunity for us? Maybe a missed opportunity for them? Or was it all likely to be too big a pain in the proverbial that nobody bothered? Or have some indeed done just that?
I am interested in your anecdotes .. so please share your thoughts, I welcome them.
I saw footage of nice over-unders (am sure I saw a 694) and modern centrefires in that mix. Likely hand-picked by them to set the scene but surely worth more than a $150 stipend?
Stay well, everyone. And may your aim be true and the dope not dopey!

From my personal understanding there were a multitude of worms in that can.
Shoot me down if I'm wrong.
a) Distance from the Wait Awhile state played a % of the issue.
b) So in general the transportation costs went up.
c) There were so many people trying to offload their "excess" ordinary f/arms and "newly" stamped "illegal" arms,, the bottom fell out $$$
d) I believe the WA govt took steps to either prevent or make very difficult,, the sale of f/arms interstate.
e) And add in the fear and scaremongering that occurred.

1) There was one gunshop that I'm aware of,, that actually made steps in advertising that they would BUY f/arms from WA owners.
No doubt with $$$$ profiteering in mind.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

Very large numbers of firearms have already been sent over or tried to sell. Not financially viable in many cases due to lower prices over here and the very high cost of shipping, add to that a slow market at the moment.

In addition to what has been said here

Apparently, the initial change to laws listed abc being illegal and eligible for the buyback, then on the 22nd of December they added xyz to the list and no-one got the update because it was Christmas, so a whole bunch of people missed the buyback opportunity, a lot of others were holding out for a pushback on the law.

Then it basically came down to you''ve got until this date to sell it otherwise it gets confiscated and by that point the market got flooded and certain dealers were offering $200 per gun saying it was better than $0

I've spoken to people that bought firearms out of WA just for the postage cost of around $300. The owners just wanted them out of the state in safe hands rather than have them destroyed.

A mate bought two rifles from there for $250 each, delivered.

WA has saturated the market over here I think.

Holding out for a push back on the law?
Won't happen sitting at home with your head down, hoping for some divine miracle.

All good mate, didn't interpret it that way at all :)

I picked up a T2000 for $500 including postage and transfer, did very well for myself and would have tried to pick up a CZ 515 if I had any extra coin at the time.

The Barn got a swag of them second hand in good nick. The rumours where they came from?
It's terrible and I can only imagine how screwed WA firearm owners feel. And worse, how the orgs taking their money to allow participation ran away.

If I hadn't had such awful experiences with Brnos/CZs in their barrel tolerances and terrible machining finish, I'd have snapped one up, being Cat A here without genuine need, but I already have a semi-auto 10/22. Don't need another one.

Yeah a PTA for a cat A(QLD)is the definition of a rubber stamp bureaucracy. You don't have to provide a genuine reason, just have a licence and pay the money. The way it should be for all guns.

So as long as you have a licence and secure storage a cat A will always be approved according to the law.
