QLD inspection

Post by morerams » 28 Aug 2026, 9:12 pm

Chatting to a shooter today who had an unannounced inspection last week, he asked them why, their answer was 3 reasons,
1/ he hadn't been inspected for more than 10 years,
2/ he had more than 10 firearms,
3/ he was over 70 years old.
Wasn't an audit only checked one rifle & one pistol and counted the number he had.
I haven't heard of this type if inspection before.

hmmm, could be more to the story . counted the number he had sounds odd , surely they know from their own records the number he has . maybe they heard some information, or are just checking some older shooters don't have any "extras" that weren't handed in 1996 ,or registered . i have heard some stories in the last few years of older shooters being really lax in storage compliance and losing the lot .
i've been back into shooting for over 10 years now and haven't had a inspection yet . which is why i make sure my storage is 100% compliant in case of a surprise visit . the cops can make up a variety of reasons for a unannounced visit.

Some bedwetter around him has tipped them off.

They came with purpose, unannounced.
10yrs and over 10 guns is horseshit.
Plenty of folk in that situation around me, and they've had not one visit, ever.

Someone around him is running their gob imo.

On a side note, I have appropriate and fully legal storage for all my firearms and ammunition etc.
I want to travel around the country long term in the van with the wife. I could be gone for up to 12 months. Does anyone know where I stand legally in terms of firearms storage?

Do you mean you want to travel with your firearms or that you want to leave them unattended at home for twelve months? If the latter, I would find a mate to leave them with or put them in a shop, but that gets expensive. A mate just did a two month cruise in Europe so he farmed all his firearms out to family and friends to hang onto for him.

If you're traveling, then you need to comply with the requirements in each state. Firearms must be legal in each state you travel through, so must magazines (WA has a blanket 10rd rule for rifles now apparently, including tube magazines - it's 5rd for shotguns). When we were in the bus I just bolted a rifle safe into it. NSW I think requires pistols to be in locked boxes. If you keep your firearms locked up out of sight and/or chain them to the vehicle or van you should be okay in most places, but check each states' specific rules. They generally just say that you must do everything reasonably possible to prevent loss or theft.

You also should have legitimate purpose for having firearms with you, so email lots of clubs en-route about stopping in for competitions and keep a record in case you do need to prove yourself. Or have letters from property owners allowing you to do some hunting while you're in their area. In WA you need the property owner to give your details to Police and wait for Police to give you permission to shoot on the property, can't just show up and have a shoot with the landowner. In Vic we can hunt in the bush anytime so you shouldn't have any issue here with CatA/B firearms. In NSW you can hunt in the bush but you would have to have an R Licence to support that. If you get to Alice Springs bust some clay pigeons at the club there for me :-)

WA is the big problem, they don't recognise other states' registrations, so you need temporary permits for your firearms and ammo. $133 regardless of whether you're going for three days or three months. You have to list your "conviction" history, including traffic offences, and list each firearm and how many rounds of ammo for each. You cannot keep your firearms in WA for more than six months during one year, and can only renew the permit once, so take the permit out for three months in case you get crook or stuck. Make sure you don't have any odd rounds in your ammo boxes for a firearm you've left home unless you've listed the ammo on the permit.

I'm doing the application now. WA Firearms told me this week that it takes up to ten days to come through. She didn't sound like a LEO as she had to go away and ask somebody about every question I asked her. I was planning to take the Henry .22 and the Rossi 92 (backup rifle) but they hold 15rd and 12rd so I'll leave them home. I doubt the permit is ever likely to come up, but it's possible the club might want to see it when I get there. It's mainly insurance in case anything happens.

Personally I would skip WA if there's nothing there you specifically want to see. Or leave your firearms at a shop before you cross the border if you're coming back the same way. I don't expect to ever go back to WA after this shoot.

Thanks bladeracer, I started another thread so as not to high Jack this one.
I didn’t realise I posted in this thread as well.
But thanks for the tips. I will not be travelling with my firearms, it’s to hard as we will be going through WA.
I am thinking of getting a house sitter in for the period we are away, but of course they will have no access to my firearms or the room they are stored in. We won’t be leaving the country, so the police can call me if they want to do an inspection.

Yeah, we used to say traveling anywhere is much the same and pretty easy, just don't go near WA.
If you had to travel with guns, leaving them stored at a Police station could be an option before entering WA.

The East Coast may be stuffed now because of Albosleasy and Minces big diversion.

Check out Mark Banasiak questioning the pretend police minister Yasmin; they clearly have no clue or knowledge about anything guns.
How could you introduce legislation like this, and organise a buyback, when they have no idea of what they are doing?
She answered that no firearms expert was consulted.
She looked very annoyed at having to make herself look stupid.

That sounds a bit suss to me also,
Unless they've rescinded the legislation recently, they are required to give 24 hrs notice (Qld) of wanting to do an inspection, and also make a date and time that is convenient to the owner.
They can rock up unannounced and ask,,, if they can inspect, however I believe the right to say it is inconvenient "right now" is still the owners prerogitive.

In my own personal experience, I have only been inspected once in my life.
Prior to that, I actually asked the local cop to come and inspect because I'm proud of my setup,, but he refused and said it would involve paper work that he didn't NEED to do.

Since then I was officially notified of an up coming inspection, and when that was completed, the cop that did it congratulated me and said that I was the first one he'd ever done where EVERYTHING was compliant.

My Firearms are stored to my satisfaction that I have done everything I can do to make sure no arsehole steals them. I don’t care about minimum standards, I just don’t want them stolen. I do everything I can to slow them down as much as possible.
The last inspection I had the copper commented that it was the first inspection he had ever done where the actions, barrels, triggers, and bolts were all stored in four different safes.
