Stag horn knife handles

Post by fawksel » 23 Jun 2014, 8:10 pm

Hi fellas,

I've got a couple of old knives with wooden handles that have been sitting in a box for years and then some.

The steel is all good, but the wood is shot. I'm thinking about getting some stag horn trying a DIY replacement.

Dunno anything about keeping stag horn. How does it last? Do you oil it? What's the story?

Cheers.

I think it lasts for ages. Fyi I spotted some antler for sale in the local pet shop recently, it was very cheap being sold as a doggy treat. I had much the same thought.Lol

I can't remember the brand (It's an old, international one) but I'll find it tonight for you and post pictures.

I have an old german blade with a stag handle that's decades old - I don't have exact time but I believe it's around 40 years old. I've had it for 20 at least.

For 20 years it's been sitting in it's leather sheath and I've never done a single thing to it. Literally never cleaned or oil or anything and it still look perfect.

I'll post pictures tonight but it lasts, I can tell you that.

Have a go Fawksel, it's easy enough.
Just try to drill the handle neatly/accurately, then Araldite it in place.
A piece of brass plate is nice, between the end of the handle and the blade. Jobs done. no oil or laquer
The one on the left I made with a second hand blade I bought at the gun show, the other one I made at a knife making class in NZ.

Here's what I was talking about.

By Hubertus Solden Rostfrei. Taken on my phone at night so not great but hopefully good enough...

That's 100% untouched for at least 20 years, and maybe a lot longer.

Think you'll find it's a fold up with the blade twice the length of the handle.

Short blade as is, or unfold for a long blade.
