21 gun salute in poor taste?

Post by Prios » 03 Oct 2014, 8:39 am

I know it's a tradition and done as an honour but I can't help think this whenever you see one.

If there is a police funeral for an officer killed in the line of duty, and same (more so?) for someone in the military... A lot of them are going to have been shot or otherwise gone in a violent manner.

If a soldier has been shot and all his family are sitting there at the funeral mourning, 21 gun salute?

Not sure that's what I'd want to hear in that particular setting.

You think? :|

I understand what your saying

But it's to honour the Soldier not the family of the soldier.

There is a bit of history and symbolism to it too, they don't just unload a few rounds for kicks.

The custom stems from naval tradition, where a warship would fire its cannons harmlessly out to sea, until all ammunition was spent, to show that it was disarmed, signifying the lack of hostile intent. As naval customs evolved, 21 guns came to be fired for heads of state, with the number decreasing with the rank of the recipient of the honor.

While the 21-gun salute is the most commonly recognized, the number of rounds fired in any given salute will vary depending on the conditions. Circumstances affecting these variations include the particular occasion and, in the case of military and state funerals, the branch of service, and rank (or office) of the person to whom honors are being rendered.

I get that side of stuff.

Seems hard on the family still though...

Just thinking out loud.

I think you'd have bigger worries on the day than a couple of loud bangs.

When a member of our black powder club goes to the reloading room in the sky we all line up on the firing line at the start of the next comp day and at the command of the RO we all load fire a volley together to mark a fellow enthusiasts passing. Kinda sad but appropriate too.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.
