I already said you can get remote cameras with repeaters to increase distance. This is purpose built equipment with many features for shooting. If you don't like it, that's fine. I just learned about it today. Mate. Crikey ;)

Thanks... Yep seen that one before. It's pretty cool! The price tag was a bit of a hurdle. I have this mental thing that if 'it' - any given single unit of shooting stuff, if you will, excluding guns and scopes costs more than a gun or a scope, I am getting more guns instead :)

I am fairly certain I can DIY and squeeze good range or of it. I recon I will over the next few month. I looked into software already, and I think I can kobble something add good with existing equipment. Maybe $100 extra all up.

It's good, mate. This is not "the" answer, it's not "my" answer, it's just one answer. If people wanted the features I think it is interesting.

I think squeezing the distance out of WiFi maxi be an issue, unless you go telco network, that costs and potentially out of signal areas.

Client side - RPi with USB and external high gain network card running from a battery back I recon is the way to go. Doing 1km max with high gain and directional antenna without obstacles in between should work.

Just need time :/

P.s. also need protective housing for lense from shrapnel; and main unit from bullets, last one could be challenging.

i think i might try building it using some FPV/Drone equipment i have lying around. Basically i'll have a 5.8 ghz transmitter attached to a camera and powered by a 12v 3 cell lipo at the target end and then on the bench / shooter end i'll have a 5.8ghz receiver wired into an old 8 inch LCD screen with a visor on it so its easy to see in the sun. Receiver end will also be powered by a 12v 3 cell lipo. All told it will cost me 'zero' as i have all the equipment already, but if you didn't have the equipment it may be around $150 or so. Range would be about 4-6 km depending on antenna's etc, so no problems there!
Build starts this weekend!

Love to see a detailed parts list and quick rundown of build for us more technically challenged. One of these would be very handy. Where to you get these bits and pieces from?

petemacsydney, i was actually thinking drones... But since I have most parts for WiFi decided to go with that. Though, I want to store images, not just stream, so transmitter with a screen is not going to do in my case.

I restarted a DIY cam thread by the way.

Post by petemacsydney » 12 Apr 2016, 8:32 pm

cool. i have a recorder as well which i could add easily, but probably wont as i get too many excuses from my shooting mates as to why their groups are larger.. lol, just jokes

to be honest, i'd prefer wifi so i can link it to the phone, but parts are plenty for me on the drone front so i'll just go with that for now - but i'm keen to see what your wifi cost works out to?

the one thing i really like about the 4sale product is the blinking of the image after the projectile hits (highlighting the latest hit for you - like they do at the commercial grade range tools), that would be cool, but not going to happen with my simple fpv/drone gear plans..

whats the link to your diy thread? i'd like to follow that!

cheers
p

Well, you know the next logical progression. Now we have to come up with something to shoot the drone down :D

Original thread.
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5474&p=89475

This one is a duplicate, can we keep all target cam talk in there (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5474&p=89475) - something for me to track, please.
