Is there any non hunting spotlight use laws in Victoria?

Post by GravyTrain » 07 Aug 2016, 11:44 pm

I am trying to find out if there are any laws in Victoria for the use of handheld spotlights from a vehicle to look at animals (not hunting related and no gun in vehicle)? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

With no firearms you are essentially just shining a torch at animals. Legal. Otherwise there might be a few Boy Scouts and girl guides in strife.

You're allowed to carry light for navigation safety purposes always, of course.

Adding a rifle to the mix is when you start bumping up against laws.

Spotlight away, but don't have a rifle with you at all at the time.

There are restrictions using spotlights from vehicles on public roads, rifle or not. Taxis are exempt.

Do you know where I can locate info about these restrictions?

Thanks. I'm aware of these laws but was told something similar to what happyhunter posted but can't seem to find anything about it online.

My girlfriend is a conservation volunteer and they regularly go out at night to monitor nest boxes and other wildlife in the national parks. They just use torches though. If you're only looking you probably don't want a spotlight. Spotlights are designed to dazzle animals at longer ranges, at close enough ranges that you can see the animal it's going to be extremely uncomfortable on their night-sensitive eyesight.

I'm assuming the OP means spotlighting from a vehicle. Apparently illegal from public roads. This was part of a law change years ago to close the loophole people were using to spotlight (shoot) off public roads. If I find the reference to it I will post it up.

I'd be very surprised if you could find something.... spotlight use is only controlled while hunting, ie with a firearm (or bow etc)..... so no hunt, no restriction.
