Very nice mate, I recently got given the FIL ol Lathe and associated tools, haven't set it up yet as I have SFA idea how to use it, just another thing to learn about I guess and I love wood so it will happen eventually I'm sure. (last time I did any woodturning was in High School LOL) I'm nearly 50 so it was some time ago LOL

Thanks mate.

Believe it or not it’s just some pine. It's my first attempt at a spoon so I cheeped out ( It came out pretty good so I kinda regret the choice…. I did hit it with some stain, to make it look a little more to my liking.

That's a rippa too Jeff, when I get around to it mate I will happily share a few pics, I think everything is there with the lathe (I guess I will find out eventually) - What I might do is head up to the local mens shed when I'm ready and have a word to them, I'm sure there's someone up there that's into wood turning etc that could show me how to go about putting this thing together and use it correctly, I've got a heap of hand tools for it too which I have SFA idea on what they do so will definitely need some info on them too.

Anyway when I finally get around to using it I will let you know.

Just started learning how to weld which I love doing too, it's another great skill to have - I gotta say I love mig welders, much easier to use than the stick.

Bigfellascott

Yeah the men's shed would be a good place to start, another would be a wood club. You may have one near you ? I would be confident that you would find some keen wood turners there that would be willing to help get you started. If you keep your tools nice and sharp (If your shavings are pigtails its a good indicator) and your tool rest nice and close to the work piece (rotate by hand to make sure it clears it) you will be on the right track to safely start playing. look up riding the bevel and watch a few tutorials. Feel free to post some pics of the lathe and tools if you get a chance :).. I'm looking forward to when you get started :D

Mig welders are great, Is it a gas or gasless one ? I'm rather interested in the Multiplaz, look's like they are very versatile units.

Gwion,

That is very generous of you mate and I'm really interested and would love to play with some beautiful Maple.. I would only need to freight to either Wangaratta Vic or Wodonga Vic, as I can get it the rest of the way free of freight charges :D So thanks a Million mate :drinks: I'll be in touch mate

I would be interested to see your template/plans. I am not making any commitment, but If it presents as a task that I feel sufficiently confident that I could achieve ?

I'm not an expert and I have not done something like that before, but I'm curious ? There are probably guys around here that have that could better serve your needs ?...

I would however be interested to have a look at your templates and see if it looks like something that I may be able to achieve for you ?

I want to help as its for a gun  , I'm just not 100% sure if I can do it ?.. If I feel I can, In the spirit of what Gwion has offered me, my part would be free of charge...

Is there a specific wood you have in mind ? Gwion has some nice wood he was telling me about that once stabilised would be perfect in my mind for the project, no matter who ends up doing it.....

Btw... any pics of the Vektor ? :D

Thanks G

I've been around it all my life thanks to my uncle, a true master of the art.. Clearly you pick up a few things from exposure to someone like that.

My uncle's hands are buggered and he can't do it anymore :( , so he gave me one of his lathes 3 months ago, I'm just trying to do him proud.. He has donated heaps of his carved rocking horses and various turning's, clocks etc... to children's charity's.. A legacy that I aspire to continue...

All in all I've probably only had about a year in total with my hands actually on the tools, prior to that.. So I'm still learning really..

Yep, in his usual selfless way he is more concerned about the terminally sick kids and associated charities that he and his wife anonymously helped for many years ( I'd estimate they have put in something in the 6 figure range, just in materials costs ) so they will feel it...

Hopefully I can assist them in a similar way.. Big shoes to fill though !

Very nice indeed mate, would you by chance be able to take some pics of the lathe etc, would be interested to see what you are using and how it is set up, this one of mine is in a heap of pieces and I have no real idea of what goes where at the moment (haven't even tried to suss it out as yet) but seeing one set up may just help me piece together how they are supposed to look roughly when they are assembled..

Bigfella,

Mine is nothing fancy mate, I had a choice of the pack and chose the lesser one... I didn't want to take away from his 2 sons Inheritance.... And I'm trying to get them into turning....

In saying that, its still very capable of producing quality turning's, particularly due to the reinforcement that he added to it.... ( As he would say, don't blame the tools )....!

Here is a pic.. I could probably help you more with a pic of what you have mate !

Could also help with the tools you have if you depict them too.. (either here or by pm, if you prefer)..

Gwion,

Your right on the money mate !.... Precisely what it was designed for.....

What do you think of this one for delivering the last rites to fish, buddy ?

Thanks DD,
I think Mountain Ash is what the axemen use for comps, or at least used to.
From memory the timber looked different, but that is most likely because what the axemen use is green, as opposed to seasoned like you have.

Cheers, :drinks: VB
