DIY 22LR tube magazine quick loader

Post by juststarting » 07 Oct 2016, 10:03 pm

Sooooo, not willing to pay $90+ for a quick loader and probably add much in shooting fees, I settled for $6 worth of materials and 15 minutes of my time.

I present to you, The Ghetto Loader 3000. Holds, 15 rounds per tube. Tubes are aluminium, so won't scratch the rifle.

I'll probably pimp it out a little more over the weekend, stay tuned :)

Dammit! Now I'm wondering if a similar device could speed load a lever action.....
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Ended up taking your lead and bought a length of tube from Bunnings and made a pair for the little Henry 22LR Lever gun. I didn't plug the tube like you, I drilled a hole each end and used a pair of "R" clips to hold the round in. When I get some time I have an idea (inspired by you) on how to make a quick loader for the 45-70 using 2 pieces of tube and a rod. I'll see what I can do on the weekend and post some pics :)

Nice! There's a bit you can do there... I have a pretty clear visual in my head about where I'd like it to be. I am going to keep the wooden plugs (stopper - bullet end), but decorate with either cut to size 308 cases or 44 cases. I tried 38, but they are just a bit too small. I suspect 9mm would work - but I don't have any 9mm cases to check... I am waiting on my 44 dies. Once I get them, I'll see if I can crimp the case around the tube. If not, then 308 will most likely work (or 7.62x54R surplus). As for the 'loading' end (primer side) of the tube, I like the plastic plugs - safe and fit well. However, once I am done with decorative plugs (actual plugs are wood hammered into the tube) I am going to try and see if I can do a bit of steampunk action there with spring loaded or some sort of mechanical sliding cap.

First, my damn 44 mag dies need to arrive.

What I would like to do next, is horizontally stack magazine, that I can hold over the feeder hole, rather than removing the entire tube and drop the rounds in there and let the gravity do its work. That however requires a lot more metal work and I don't have the equipment for it. Could potentially find some old handgun single stack magazine, file off the lips and install some sort of catch. Just a thought.

Alright, I did a quick trial to see what would work in regards to pimping the tube... Here's what I come up with.

The end cap (where the wooden dowel is, not the loading end):
I tried a few different cases I have access to and 44MAG seems to be the best. I tried to crimp it as much as I could to see if I can get some tension...

Image

...almost. Not tight enough though. Still some room, but we are talking fraction of a mm. So this is a win - healthy amount of epoxy and this is going to work very well, I think.

Since I also tried a 308 case, I had the neck end ready to go... But I am not convinced that this is the way to go.

Perfect for size, but I just don't like how it looks. I think I will stay with the original plastic caps for the business end of the loading tube for now. I have another idea I want to try, sort of like a kettle spout cap - but spring loaded.

Alright, I think I got the cap issue solved. About to pop that on my blog methinks, but here's a preview :)

Adding bling phase

Crimped 44MAG case and liberal amount of epoxy. This is the dead end cap that sits over the wooden dowel.
Image

Now, on to the actual cap that needs to come off to load the tube or the magazine...

Brain fart! I would try to cut the cap of the plastic rivet I use right now, split it. I would then decap and drill out the primer pocket on the 44MAG case. Finally, I would attaching the rivet on the inside of the 44MAG case with a wood screw.

Trial run… Looks good.

…and thats about it. Two more to go.

I think I like it! I still want to try to make something spring loaded, but I need a little more time for that.
