Completely useless rifle "reviews"

Post by defau » 24 Nov 2013, 10:35 am

Surely I'm not the only one who thinks this...

I've spent half the morning watching YouTube videos with rifle reviews, or some of them anyway.

I can't believe how many videos there are where someone films themself shooting on the bench, then doesn't show their group or say what ammo they were using or anything.

It's just a few minutes straight of a guy sitting a at a table basically :(

If you're going to call it a review. Do some reviewing for us

Yes, I know the ones.

Don't know why anyone thinks you want to watch them sit at a bench for 2 minutes then not see their shots, but apparently they do...

Half the guys don't even speak and give you their thoughts on the stuff, let alone show the groups.

Just goes straight to them sitting silently at a bench for 2 minutes like you said.

Pisses me off too

My favourite was of a guy taking a shot, with the camera facing him from the muzzle end then claiming he hit a coin at 1100 yards then not showing the target just dancing around by himself talking about how good he is

There's a good one where a guy hits a beer can at 1500m on his first shot.

He had the class to admit it was a bit of a fluke too though :D

I had a quick look but couldn't find it... There is one where a guy is testing some loads at 50m and doesn't show you the target, but after shooting he looks through the scope and says he's getting about 1/4 groups.

He then turns the camera around while he's finishing up so you're looking at the range behind him, and you can see the target in the distance and make out what looks to be about a 4" group on it

One that I have been noticing of late, especially when trying to research firearms. Those blog 'reviews' that are either fanboys bouncing off of the walls with glee, or just blatant advertising that has nothing to do with actually reviewing the firearm or part in question, other than to say: "Look here, buy this! It's great, has no downsides and will last forever!"
Tends to get annoying when you read three or four reviews that say the exact same thing.

That's the worst.

A site loses me forever when I see that crap.

love Hickok45 videos for detailed information, FPS Russia is a little less informative but a hell of a lot more fun

I've come to the conclusion that the vast majority of those DIY videos are just some home movie of a bloke shooting his piece.

There is absolutely no review value whatsoever, unless you like to dwell on other people shooting.

Personally I'd rather be the one doing the shooting but no cameras please.

Exactly.

Half of them don't even say a word. Not even some initial thoughts or observations. It's just a few minutes of some bloke shooting a rifle :?

Yea some are not worth watching longer than 10 sec.

Have found some good info tubes. You have to ask the search engine a question like, how to reassemble a bolt for a k98 ? or a specific rifle.

Looking at older guns or ex military there are some great you tubes around.

The best reviews are written mostly USA though there are a couple of good Australian one.

Yeah there are a few gems.

Gotta find them though.

Mostly from the USA as you say, more heart goes into their stuff than just filming it here for some people because it's a novelty.

I was just having a bit of a rant here TBH

It's not about particular things, just some have zero information in them. That was the frustration when looking for info when deciding on a new buy.

I'll check out the ozzie review channel though :)
